Car Parts

My car has failed it MOT AGAIN. I was quited £300 for the work, which i refuse to pay.
I need new brake disks and brake pipes. I'm not being funny but brake disks cost £22.99 from Halfords, so don't see how it can be £300 to fix my car.

I need brake pipes, where do i get them from and any idea how much they will cost? My mechanic said he'd just custom make them out of copper pipe, but I'd rather my OH do the work for free.

  • So you need at least two new brake discs, with new discs you'll also need new pads as a matter of course.

Then fashioning the pipes requires special tools, and time and patience as the old pipes have to be removed and replaced. This often requires a significant amount of work as they need to be shaped around the various internal components and structures of the car.

£300 is a bargain if you ask me. Your OH, if he doesn't know how to manufacture brake pipes, will be creating a possible death trap.

what type of car is it?

google 'euro car parts', i find them to be really good, and relativly cheap. type in your registration plate and it will bring up all the parts.

Pipes are made individually and if you don't have the tools you won't be able to do it. Your OH should be able to do the pads but only do that if he is comfortable doing it. If not leave it to a mechanic.

Saying that the quote does seem quite high are you at a main dealer? Try and find an indepedent.

It's an independant dealer, my OH is a diesel engineer so is happy do the work.

I've already got the brake pads for the car.

    It's a Ford fiesta.

I'm at the end of my tether with that car pretty much. I don't have £300 to spend on it, and really doubt it's even worth £300 to get it on the road again.

Well Ford have quoted £30 for the brake pipe and £23 for the brake disks. so £53 for parts - i don't think the labour will be £250 somehow....
The ford person seemed rather concerned the mechanic couldn't tell me if i needed vented or closed disks either

The pipes are quite easy to make. You need to buy a roll of Kunifer pipe and a flaring kit, these are around £15 at Machine Mart. Oh, and a load of fittings. Depending on which pipes it is, it can take a lot of time and effort to get it all in place. Of course, it requires some basic mechanical competance to do safely.#

Yeah, discs and pads. Decent discs can be around £40 per pair, pads £20 maybe.
