Can't afford Aygos and not sure if i trust Toyotas after the recalls.
One component has had a fault in a few instances and they've recalled a load of models to fix it for free. That's not good grounds to "not trust" a brand.
Cant speak for fiestas in your price range, but the Mk3 cars in my experience are fantastic little beasties! I just couldn't kill my old N reg one
They were the most hateful model of Fiesta.

Just interested, what are your grounds for saying that? Ok, so they aren't super fun to drive or amazingly fast, but they are far far from hateful. I certainly never regretted taking mine on and I'm thinking that my next car will be another.

Surely with 27 years in the motortrade you wouldn't be buying VW as so many other of the mechanics on these boards state!

As a very general rule, residual and second hand values can be used as a guide of a car's desire. What influences consumer's desire? Reliability, street cred, availability of parts, build quality etc.

As a general rule again, German and Japanese cars in particular tend to have good resale values. Italian, French and SE Asian car's suffer some of the worst initial depreciation on the market. There is a reason for this.

It will be interesting to see how the 500 fares when it is a few years old, but I'll bet that it will have much worse depreciation than the MINI once the hype dies down.

Someone has said they are very happy with their Pandas - great, I'm very happy for them. But they are lucky.

Fiats are not known for their reliability, their electrics nor their build quality. That is not to say that they have not made some nice looking cars (Fiat Dinos, 124 Spiders, X1/9, Barchettas, and Coupes) but I would not recommend anyone on a limited budget buys one for everyday motoring unless it is still covered by a manufacturer warranty.

The OP has a limited budget, and I'd imagine will not be maintaining their car themselves, so if I were them, I'd want to buy a preowned car with a good reputation.

The Toyota situation reminded me of this, bit of a long read but interesting:

    .

Agreed 100%, quite the reverse in fact, many makers would have tried to worm their way out of a recall.

Unfortunalty you forget the power of marketing and image that sways a lot of the consumers desires nowadays and indeed residuals- indeed probably reasons why the 500 and Mini have high residuals.

Indeed it's probably the main reason behind residual values, reliability is probably only a small part now. Look at hatchbacks, Ford Focus, Kia Ceed, Vauxhall Astra (German too), Toyota Auris (dull but reliable so no residuals), the Civic, Fiat Bravo all are much of a muchness if you pull them up on a graph. The VW Golf however massivily outperforms them all- and it is based clearly on image.

VW seems to be living off a reputation of image and quality, and I think they seem to have the best marketing men if you read stuff even mentioned on this site.

I think you are being unnessarily harsh on the Panda too stating that people are 'lucky' it hasn't gone wrong. The Panda has been a resounding success story and part of Fiat Groups immense recovery since the millennuim where it was making massive losses on poor product that was unreliable. They've started to really improve the product and the Panda built in Poland along with the Ford Ka. It gets rated highly by people I know and the surveys seem to be positive, so I don't know why you're so hard on it- heck even Honest John seems to think it is a decent car. Any car can go wrong, they'll be Friday afternoon cars everywhere and these days it seems Fiat are no worse than most mainstream manufacturers, the major failing being dealers.

Equally cars like Kia's Ceed are good cars, seemingly nice and reliable, but because it is a Kia people shun them, like Skodas were 15 years ago.

I agree that the sentimate is always buy Japanese for reliability but I wouldn't look at German cars for that anymore- Czech cars seem to be better for less money!

Now if TR4 was talking about the Punto I would tend to agree with him.
