Paying off Orange Contract

Right, first post, better make it a beauty :P
Effectively I'm trying to pay off my Orange contract. I've got six months left of a £25 a month contract (It's the Dolphin £35 contract discounted by a tenner.) However when I phoned today to ask how much it would be to cancel I was told it would cost "£170" I've thus far racked my brain and yet to come up with the maths this man applied on the phone. I've since lowered my tariff to the Dolphin 25 which discounted comes to £15 a month, however I'm curious if I've been muddled over here so to speak?
He also told me an interesting thing, apparently my £10 line rental discount is only applied once if I pay it all off. So I'd only get a £10 discount on my final bill, not on each individual month. Any ideas about this?
Thanks,
Dave

Unfortunatly if your paying off early your at the mercy of the teleco.
You could try phoning agian see if a different telebod gives you a differeent answer but you may well be stuck.0 -
It's an automated system which takes your line rental price, multiplies it by your remaining months and should factor in an early-termination reduction (usually ex-vat & ~5% discount). The £10 loyalty reward is, as it suggests, exactly that. A loyalty reward. However as you're no longer being loyal, this reward is not factored into an early termination calculation.
Therefore, approximately your termination fee is £35 * 6 = £210. Minus VAT = £178.72 - ~5% = £169.79 (i could be wrong about the 5% thing btw.)
If you've lowered your tariff to the £25 Dolphin, you'll need to wait until your billing date kicks-in so the tariff is actually on Dolphin £25 (if you're billing date is say the 12th of each month, the system will assume you're still on Dolphin £35 until the 12, when you change to £25. - therefore before the 12th the early-termination will be calculated on £35/month, after the 12th it'll be on the £25/month tariff.)
At £25 /month with 6months remaining, you're looking at about: £120 (with VAT removed and ~5% discount.)
the above values / calculations are estimates. As it is system generated, irrespective of the agent you speak with, the Early-termination fee will be the same (give or take a couple of days charges based on when you call).

Thanks for clearing that up!
