So you want a big 4 door saloon (or 5 door estate) car with a 2 litre engine. That doesn't really narrow it down very much. What's your budget?

Id have a beemer but hey thats me!
Seconded. Or an older merc. Fuel consumption shouldn't really be too much of an issue with your mileage. Oh actually, maybe not, you say you don't want too big a car. Any BMW or merc is likely to be bigger than the laguna.

Without any of this info I'm going to suggest you get a Subaru Legacy :)

Think you may have misunderstood my post. We need a car with 4 doors to get kids in and out seats easy enough (aged 1 and 3). Engine size doesn't matter its commute inner city on 20-30 MPH roads mostly. Budget is 3k and milage 5k.

Rictus I personally fancy an Evo IIIV but her not in my budget or all that practical plus the OH will be driving it most of the time.

MarsdenCuckoo - Think a clio is possibly too small but i've never actually been in one for years, A friend of mine used to have a 91 Clio and that was a box. That is my experience of Clio's

Rev-Henry I just don't think we NEED another big car. I drive a zaferia 1.9tdci but do about 15k a year in that.

Tomstickland - take your point re fuel costs. Laguna only averageing 29.1MPG according to the trip at the moment. I blame OH driving for that rather than the car though.

Looks like we should go have a look at a clio, a fiesta, a focus and then crunch some numbers. The 3k is in addition to whatever would be offered for laguna but i am guessing not alot. We will probably just run the laguna for another 3-4 years if we can. She has only done 40k so plenty of life left in her

Hey i also need help as i am running Mitsubishi Gallant 2.0 model 1995-6. I want to sell it and want same like gallant but company should be changed because i am fed up with Mitsubishi.

My last car was a 1998 V6 Galant, awesome car, got too old and in need of attention plus the dealers were starting to really rip me off on servicing and maintentance so it went. Took me over a year to find something I was will to part with it for.
    My short list:
    Honda Accord
    Mazda 6
Toyota Avensis not bad but preferred the other two
I bought the BMW 320d in the end, partly because wife already had a Mazda 6, felt silly to have two.

Still miss that V6 though :(

My wife drives a Fiesta 1.4TDCI and shes doing roughly 100 miles per £10 of diesel, with a lot of stop/start driving. Its a brilliant car although slightly underpowered at times, £35 per year road tax aswell which is a bonus.
