Unscrewing a wingnut

Hi
Trying to replace a toilet seat and one of the wingnuts attaching the old one is stuck on. Both the "wings" have now snapped off and although I've managed to turn it a little it's still very stuck. Any ideas about how to get it off? I don't really have much DIY stuff apart from a few basics.
Thanks,
Bob

Have you got small stiltsons ?
Pliers may do but it'll be difficult if the bolt is rusted.
Put some WD40 on before you start.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Pliers or Mole Grips (locking pliers) will be needed+ WD-40 or easing oil. Mole grips are not very expensive and very useful to have around the place.
See here http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=mole+grip&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-aI can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Ok, cheers for that. Mole grips I can just get from a diy shop? And if, you know, your history...0

Hi,
it might be easier if you can get a good grip on the threaded bit, it is only into the hinge about 1/4 inch, easier than trying to unscrew wingnut all the way, won't matter if you mash it up a bit, as you will be putting new bits on.
Here's a tip, if you're putting new metal bits on, firstly, I would cut down the threaded bit, you don't need 2 inches unused thread, and I would smear the thread with vaseline before screwing up and when tightened, stops the thread rusting up again with the steam.
Oh, and if the reason for replacing seat is because it's shoogly, I can recommend these, been on mine for over a year and not moved.
Edit: ha ha, just re-read that, no I'm not constipated.

i just snap them off
i never bother with undoing them. takes far too long.Get some gorm.0 -
hacksaw, possibly easier to cut through the bit above the pan rather than below if access is a problem0
