No problems with Credit Report, yet I can't open an account!

Hi there,

I have tried to apply for a student bank account at both Lloyds TSB and Halifax. In both cases I was turned down, citing my low credit rating as a reason for not opening an account.

I am 18 years old, and I am going to university next year. I ran a credit report from Experian, Call Credit Check and Equifax and none of them show any problems with my details, and no late payments.

However, all of the reports report the account balance on my current accounts to be £0.00 (which they are not!)

Is this normal, or is there a means by which I can raise it with the credit agencies so that I am able to apply for one of these accounts?

Thanks for your help.

Are you on the electoral register?

What about getting a student account with your current bank?

When I have viewed my reports any positive balance shows as zero. Only credit card and debit balances show. I am guessing this is because it is a credit report and as such they are only interested in borrowing.

My guess is the same as mrcow - if you are not registered on the electoral role you will have trouble getting a bank account.

    Try Barclays and Natwest.
  • If you are going to University NEXT year you don't need a student account now.
You don't qualify for one unless you already have a UCAS letter confirming your course.

It's a little early for student account applications. When I was applying in 2005, you need your confirmed offer letter after you have met all the requirements... so if you're taking A levels etc now then you wont have this yet

    EDIT: damn...beaten to it

  • Yes, I am on the electoral roll.

Many thanks for your help so far!
  • And I forgot to say - I applied for deferred entry last year, so I already have a confirmed university place through UCAS.

  • 1 credit search in 6 months, and no CIFAS reports.

Any thoughts on how/where I could appeal against this?
