Have a look here perhaps

Not quite sure what you mean by
"they both see each other but cant get them to see each other on a network"
I'm no expert but it may mean that the adapter and pcmcia card are set for an "adHoc" network. There should be utilities to change settings and you need to change "adhoc" to "infrastructure" I think.
Further advice would be make sure no firewalls are running while you trying to get things working and also don't worry about WEP encryption until you have basic network sorted.0 -
What I mean by they both see each other is that on wireless view they see each other, but if I go into network places on either computer they dont see each other.
That site was helpful will give there suggestions a go0 -
Excuse my ignorance but what's wireless view?0

when you go into properties of the wireless card, theres an option for wireless networks,it is there where I see my home pc and if I do the same with my home pc i get to see the laptop, that is what I was trying to say. sorry for not making it clearer.

What type of wireless router are you using?0

I am not using a router,as I already had a router did not want to go to the expense, was told that the set up I have would be sufficient.0

Right Rumbo, lets try a few basic ideas.
Have you got Microsoft Clinet for Windows installed, and Microsoft File and Print sharing for Microsoft Networks installed and turned on? Both these items can be found in the properties of your network adapters. If they are listed make sure that the boxes next to them are ticked, as this tunrs them on and off without having to remove them.
Once these are on, you will still need to setup the network protocols to 'talk to each other'. You should have TCP/IP installed on both adapters, and each needs to have an IP address. You may want to set these IP addresses yourself, or, if you are using Windows 2000 or XP, the adpater will get an 'emergency' IP address from the system starting 169.254.x.x. Check for the presence of an IP address by going to an MS-DOS prompt within windows and typing 'ipconfig /all'
This will list a selection of numbers, one of which will be labelled IP Address....
Once you have both addresses written down (one for each PC or Network adapter) PING each one of them from the other.
Goto a command prompt and type
PING 169.254.x.x (x's are your unique address). Make sure you ping the OTHER address from each adapater if you gert my meaning. The test will either come back and say host unreachable or Pinging 169.254.x.x. and give you four successful pings.
If this works they are seeing each other, then all you have to do is configure file and print sharing. If you want to know how to do this let me know. For now, just get this forst bit working.

Right the ping worked on the laptop but the computer could not ping the laptop. Any ideas to the next stage0

right Ive got them both to ping each other, what next?0

In case SONIC is not able to reply this evening I would suggest assuming the things mentioned in SONIC's opening paragraph are installed and ticked, make sure both machines have the same workgroup name. In XP right click my computer >properties > computer name, to check. If necessary click change to alter it.0
