Scotland

Hi everyone. I hope someone here can help me.

My parents are coming out from Australia and I want to take them up to Scotland for a week. Thing is, last time I went it cost us about £25 per person for a B&B room. Does anyone know if self catering is cheaper? Can anyone give suggestions of how to find a small cottage with two bedrooms? I want to stay up around Inverness and hire a car to see some of the countryside. Australian dollars don't do so well over here so I'd like to keep it cheap if possible.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Not quite a B&B or a cottage but me and the missus stayed in a JD Wetherspoons hotel in Inverness and enjoyed it.

You get 3 nights for the price of 2 which cut's the price down a fair bit. Prices are £44 a room. Think you get a room big enough for a family of 4.

Breakfast down the stairs in the restraunt is abour £3 for the dearest and £2 for the cheapest and good quality.

It's bang in the middle of Inverness if you want to go out at night and lot's of restraunts about.

Was also very quiet and customer friendly when we went at the start of february.

Also have a small car park :)

Have you considered a static caravan? There are quite a few sites in teh area and they often come in cheaper than b&b.

depends on the time of year as it could be more costly in a Cottage.
Could always try travel inn travel lodge or look for a cheap BB if you have plenty of time

It might be worth trying the scottish youth hostel assoc http://www.syha.org.uk/SYHA/web/site/home/home.asp
I haven't tried them myself but have had very good reports!
Also how about camping? You could buy a chep tent when you arrive and it would see you through your trip!
Hope you have a lovely trip!

  • Hi Grimelda,

I live in Inverness and truthfully cannot really recommend anywhere - absolutely nothing wrong with Inverness, I just haven't come across anyone that has had to stay in a B&B or Hotel.

I found this through google: http://www.letting-in-scotland.co.uk/inverness_and_highland_holiday_letting.htm

    Another for B & B's: http://www.visithighlands.com/accommodation/

There are three travel lodges here - they are all minutes from the town if you have a car.

I think the hotels would be perhaps too expensive.

Hertz, Avis & Enterprise Car Hire all work from the airport. (www. in front of their name 7 .co.uk after it) There is also a firm situated in Inverness "Nationalcar" who would meet you at the airport - 01463 238084.

I can certainly advise you on areas, I just haven't visited a B&B or rented cottage here.

I hope this helps as a start.

the only reaonable b&b i could find was this one
www.scotland-inverness.co.uk/balaggan but self catering would be cheaper just google, self catering in scotland, and see what comes up or if it were possible you could buy a copy of the scottish papers today the Sunday Post and the Sunday Mail ( not the mail on Sunday) have a lot of self catering hols in their ads on back pages

Try Cromarty on Line. It's a small quiet conserved mediavel village on the Cromarty Firth.....has a real pirate graveyard! and a dolphin-watch. The Cromarty Arms has (I think if I remember correctly) 3 bedrooms and it's worth phoning them up to try a bit of haggle...the food is home-made and the company is great. There are also cottages for rent. I hope this helps......BTW, Cromarty is aprox 20mins drive from Inverness.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I was in Scotland last July and B&B prices definitely seem to have gone up. Camping would be a good idea for me but my parents are from Queensland -- they would be solid lumps of ice by morning. They think 15 degrees Celsius is cold!

    Anyway, thanks again.
