I think all buyers should be charged 2% of total. Why should the sellers have to pay all the fees.

I'm not sure I follow your logic in this one. The market is set by the buyers so it is up to the seller to make the transaction as attractive as possible. I would boycott any shop that started charging me fees to buy from them when I could walk next door and pay the 'offer' price.

People that charge extra for paypal tend to lose out in the long run. They either eventually get their auctions pulled by ebay, or have so many buyers chose not to bid that they don't get the same price for their goods.

LIke others have already said I don't bid where there is a surcharge.

  • if you're worried however just put his ID on here and i'm sure someone will do it for you :)
Which would, of course, be against eBay's rules and could lead to the person posting here getting their eBay account suspended!

If as a seller I can't (and do not) charge extra for Paypal, am I in breach of the rules if I advertise I will offer a reduction in the price for payments by other methods.. say bank transfer???

Where the paypal charges of 3.4% are not paid by me.. I could offer a generous 1.5% reduction to the buyer and still be quids in..
The only place where success comes before work is the dictionary…

If they're as good at that as they are at removing all the items that are illegal that i send them then i wouldn't worry ::)

EDIT: can you give me the link for this policy?
  • It seems a bit of clarity is needed. eBay are very clear in their policy that charging extra is a breach of the rules and they explicitly reference Paypal as an example.

Putting it simply: Yes the buyer has the choice so I would boycott these kind of sellers . But also they are in very clearly in breach of the rules and should be reported to eBay.

    Link to eBay policy: http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/policies.html#surcharges

Quote from Nostromo: "I think all buyers should be charged 2% of total. Why should the sellers have to pay all the fees."

This is standard retail practice when using credit cards anywhere, retailers have to pay their chosen credit card bank a percentage typically around 5% and usually nowadays absorb the costs as typical operational costs and price goods and services accordingly (although in the UK retailers do have a legal right to pass on the credit card processing fee, but this does not include electronic money service such as Paypal). Paypal enables low volume sellers and 'average joe' to take advantage of credit card payments without having to pay higher fees to banks and set up merchant bank accounts, which would prove very difficult if not impossible.

Interesting point by Raggie, I've wondered this myself and haven't found an answer to it yet. If anyone finds out a post here would be useful.

At the end of the day, eBay is clear in their policy whether you agree with it or not, but you are agreeing to abide by it when selling on eBay. If you don't then go and sell elsewhere. It is sellers who try and circumvent the rules that give eBay trading a bad name.

..... OK, I'll get off my soap box now!

If a seller offers a range of payment options then offering paypal with a surcharge is perfectly acceptable.

I can tell you that paypal take a MASSIVE relative cut for low value items.

Sellers have to pay to list pay if the item sells so why should they then have to pay to receive payments as well?

At the end of the day if you don't want to pay the surcharge then use a different payment option eg a cheque or postal order (dont forget to moan about having to buy a stamp and envelope - maybe the seller should provide these as well?)

A paypal surcharge is NOT perfectly acceptable when it is against ebay terms and conditions. As has been said before if you don't like the paypal charges either don't use it or don't use ebay.

As for why should sellers pay all the charges, um, because ebay is demand led if I was a buyer why should I pay?

Finally, yes paypal charges are high and I owuld prefer them to be cut. However, as I sell abroad I could not operate without paypal. So my choice is either don't sell abroad or sell and take the charges.
