Another point of contact in Scotland for advice

    Here:

The link below takes you to information on Council Tax arrears - but my best advice is to phone the number given in the first link above, explain the position and ask for help.

Good idea MF, they are knowledgeable and you should be able to speak/email someone sooner than trekking down to CAB.

  • i spoke to someone at national debtline, she was helpful and went through our income and what we could afford to pay. she asked me to phone the sherrif officers and offer them this, i just did and they said no. unless i can pay the full amount it's bank account arrestment.

i have no idea what to do, i will try to open another account but chances are it would justget arrested too.

    Hi ...

Find out who your local authority councillor is for your area and make contact with their office, tell them the facts and seek any help they can give.

It may also help if you make a call to the Council Offices and also tell them about your call to National Debtline etc, and how the Sherriffs Officers would not accept your offer. Council Offices can be tricky - depends on who you get on the phone, but it is worth trying.

    Hi again ....

    Found this:

    http://www.govanlc.com/benefits_&_bankarrestment.htm

Based on that it looks like certain payments/benefits can NOT be subject to an arrestment in Scotland.

There is a letter there that you can use/adapt as it applies to you - depends on what benefits you are actually getting - and were it me, I would read it, absorb the details, and then phone the Sherriff Officers again - read the letter out to them, and ask them to accept that they may be acting wrongly if they ignore what is involved.

    Hope this helps ...

    *EDIT*

In case you don't know this, MSE are using the Govan Law Centre for help in the Bank Charges reclaim initiative, so they can be trusted - and maybe you could also phone them.

Seldom_Use, do you happen to be in Glasgow? If so, if you are planning to contact the council as suggested above, I'd recommend going into the council tax office on John Street (get there just before they open and you won't neeed to queue for hours) rather than phone. The staff behind the counter are more helpful and sympathetic than the one's on the phone (probably because they are face-to-face).

And Govan Law Centre are fab - hugely busy, but fab - their website will have loads of info.

Good luck, I hope you can get it sorted quickly :)

  • thanks nicca but it's north lanarkshire council unfortunatly :( my partner is going to phone them directly today and see if there's anything they can do to stop the sherrif officers.

we've worked out that we could maybe give them £500 this month and £500 next month, leaving another £500 to pay..
