bank acct arrestment.

hi!

i have council tax arrears and am unable to make the payments they're asking. so now they have told me bank account arrestment will be enforced.

does anyone have any advice on what i should do? as far as i can see my account will be frozen. should i open a new account? will they arrest the new one too? i will pay them the money back, i just mean how am i supposed to pay my bills and rent when my accounts frozen?

any advice would be hugely appreciated, thanks!

    I thought you might be.
There is some advise on the CAB in scotland if you google `bank arrestment` it will come up!

Have you been discussing repayment options?
Is there no way of you trying to raise the extra a month to repay it? (ie, cutting back on outgoings for a while)

  • thankyou for replying savingmummy!

they won't discuss repayment plans anymore because a new council tax year is starting soon. the repayments were almost £500 a month which i could no way afford. they said i can still make payments to the account but they are going ahead with bank arrestment anyway.

Change banks sharpish before they get the arrestment in.

That is a lot a month!

I think you need to change bank or get quick advise, your debt will spiral otherwise and you will end up owing money elsewhere too!

They could in theory try to arrest your new account as well if they become aware of it. Are you earning or on benefits? If you are on benefits there are some specific laws about having access to your money as its needed to live so this may be useful.

Think you need to get some advice from somewhere like Scottish CAB, certainly it looks like this is a common course of action in Scotland but one CAB are not in favour with so they may be able to suggest ways round it.

How much roughly do you owe in council tax?

Is there any way you can borrow the money?
Do you have other debts right now? ie, credit card?
