Launderettes

Does anyone use them?
I went to one today as I wanted to wash some really big loose sofa covers.
Managed to wash and dry them in a few hours. I live in a flat and struggle to dry clothes. For £2 you could dry the equivalent of about 3 loads of washing from a domestic washing machine which is pretty good I think. I think in the future I may use the launderette just to dry clothes. I was so surprised as to how busy it was in there. I thought launderettes were a dying past time.

Last time I even considered going to a launderette was back in the 80's when I thought I might catch a glimpse of some totty in his boxers!!

Actually it never occurs to me to go to the launderette nowadays but what a good idea to use it to dry stuff. I expected it to cost a lot more.

I've always lived in flats since I stopped living with my parents and have always used a clothes airer without any problems. It can take upto 48 hours for clothes to dry but has got to both save money and be "greener" than tumble drying. When I have got home from a busy day the last thing I would want to have to do would be waste time faffing about in a laundrette!0 -

The last thing I would want to do is watch my knickers dry..........
OP the last time I dried at the lauderette is was expensive! I wonder if they just set their own time on the machines for the money IYKWIM0 -
I personally cant stand having wet washing hanging around. Granted its not a problem in warmer weather as although I live in a flat I do have a small balcony which I can put an airer on. The other thing I find is that if the washing doesnt dry quick enough it starts to smell musty. Underwear is ok but larger items and things like towels and jeans can take a while.0

I was torn between having my duvet washed at the laundrette for a tenner or washing it myself in the bath. Did it myself, ended up with a hole in the bath and a very expensive plumbers bill (don't ask!)
So for larger, hard to dry items, for me it's the laundrette all the way from here on in. Preferable with a service wash so I don't have to sit for hours waiting. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
In this weather I usually go to the launderette at least once a week. I can't stand having wet washing lying around, and it's enough to have the stuff that can't be tumbled hanging about to dry, without everything else. Where I go it's 20p for 3 minutes and some of the machines are so hot that if you leave the dry washing in the basket, it's still warm the following day. So you don't need to spend an awful lot to get it done. And it's worth it just to get it all out of the way in one go! And DD loves to tag along to match the dry socks up
!!
JxxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -
Many launderettes don't let people use the dryers unless they've also used the washine machines; it might be worthwhile checking whether there are any notices about this.0

When I was a student, at times I had no choice but to use the launderette. I found it was really hit and miss depending on the one I used. Some worked out not too bad, but some took literally hours to dry my clothes, and i had to constantly pump money into them.
I waited 3 hours once, used up all my money and my clothes were still damp, so as use of an iron was free, I ironed my stuff until it was dry! I hate launderettes still as a result of this!
I have a washing machine, but no tumble dryer. I have a clothes airer (which I can put in a lesser used room) and a ceiling airer in my landing upstairs. I find my familys things never take longer than 24 hours, even jeans, and mostly will dry over night. I also use washable nappies and have never had a problem drying these either. I'm not saying it's bad or wrong to use a dryer, but for my family the initial outlay of buying a dryer, and the running costs are not worth it.0 -
my family and I went to center parcs in December. My partner also took down the clothes line in the garden in order to fix the shed roof.
So, I had washing from CP (myself , partner and our 3 children) , in between CP and Christmas, the christmas gatherings (dont want an airer with clothes on show and nowhere else to put it), NY gatherings, then back to normal.
By this time the washing was overtaking the kitchen:o.
3 hours later at the launderette, I had 6 orange sacks washed and dried and smelling lovely for about £25.00.
I'm on top of it all now, but thank god for the laundretteCapital one was £1000.00 now £0.00:j
Barclaycard was £250.00 now £190. 00
Asda credit card was £500.00 now £0.00:j
Aim to be credit card free by December 2012... Mostly done0 -
In areas where I've lived, all launderettes have always had signs up saying you could only use the driers if you'd used their machines.
They do this because imagine how annoyed you'd be if you'd just used their machines and there were no driers left because they were all taken by people who were only using the driers.0
