Desperate to do spring onions this year, but am growing entirely in pots and containers.

What sort of container is right for spring onions? I have heard you can do them in a bog standard seed tray- is this true? Is it deep enough?

  • last year we grew spring onions in beds as well as containers, no difference in them
i was very surprised at flavour though, VERY strong, nice though, but used half the amount to bought ones in dishes, they lasted well and we had a lengthy crop, in both beds & tubs

They are very shallow rooting - most onions sit on top of the soil, and the roots only go down at absolute most about 2 inches. For spring onions being a lot smaller you'd get away with something like a seed tray if that's all you can manage, but obviously you may need to water more frequently.

I grew mine in an old window box. They grow on the surface, but they were GORGEOUS! Sooo much better than the ones you get in the shops!

  • I grew some successfully in seed trays last year. Only planted a few (scrounged the seeds from SIL) as I was just experimenting really but will grow more this year now I know it works!

A few years ago, I bought some long plastic troughs and use them for spring onions (you can easily get 3 rows in), as well as pak choi, lettuces, rocket & mizuna. When the roots don't go all the way to the bottom, I save money on compost by putting a thick layer of yoghurt pots or old plastic flowerpots in the bottom and filling in on top. Have had good crops from these troughs.

It is possible but some nice terracotta pots would look better, also more room for root growth.
  • I did mine in a normal plant pot last year. They did absolutely fine and were lovely.
