Cancelling sky tv within before 12 months, will the card remain active to use?

Options
Daughters moved out of her house and cancelled her sky, broadband, tv and phone due to end on 10th feb although she is leaving only 6 months into her contract so she is expecting to be charged for the remaining months. Will they charge full price for these?

Shes moved in with me and I just have sky freesat with old digibox but we have swapped this over to daughters sky+ box using her card and it does work and records but not while watching another channel but thats better than nothing. Her selection packs are on too.

What I wanted to know is, as daughter has cancelled all services with sky and they are due to stop on 10th Feb seeing as the tv is working here we would like to keep the tv especially as she will be paying for it anyway. We are wondering if she should actually ask them to leave the card active or do you think she should just leave it and see if the channels stay on anyway after 10th or ask them before that date as asking them to reinstate them afterwards might start nother 12 months contract again, it always seems to.

Is it more a possibility they will only leave it as freesat as its been cancelled or is there much chance her selection packs will stay on too?
Thanx

as your daughter is still going to have to pay for the services are you not able to just change it all to your address so you can still use the services?

I dont have a bt line so use virgin media for bb, tv and phone but I do have the old sky with freesat. I know they could transfer the tv to this address but I dont know how that would affect me if I want to take up an offer at some stage in the future myself with them if I ever choose to swap or get a sky+ box as they might say I have already had one at this address and when she moves out she will take it with her.

I just wondered if the card and extra channels would still be active as its within the 12 months, if so it will be no problem. I know if its out of the 12 months they just leave it as freesat when cancelled

The contract will remain in your daughter's name, so just enjoy it!! Don't worry about future upgrades: offers to suit all circumstances seem to come and go.

One final point to note: although the contract is for 12 months there is often scope to downgrade within that period eg get rid of movies, sports etc.

At the moment though its set to be cancelled on 10th feb, she had to do that as she has moved out but they said there was a 30 day notice.

Even though it stays in her name I'm not really sure if its best to ring them before 10th to make sure card and channels remain active for the remaining 12 months or to just leave it and they will stay on anyway as its still been paid for?

Ring! Otherwise they may finalise the account, close down the pay channels and send a bill for the remaining 6 months of the contract, all to be paid in one go.

Sky have never actually said anything about her being in contract when she rang to cancel and she didnt remind them in the hope they may not charge her. She assumes she is still classed as being in contract because she originally joined sky in Sept 2008 but moved at the end of June 2009 which was still within the 12 months. Sky put it through as a house move and never told her it would start another contract from the beginning and they never have told her this but she has heard from others that it actually does start another contract when moving. She isnt sure if its been missed when she cancelled, nothing is showing in her online account about a cancellation so we wondered if it might show on there after 10th.

Is it normal that it wouldnt show in her online account? there is nothing in track your order too
    Thanx

  • Hoping is not really a solution. A phone call will clarify matters.

The bill has now appeared in the online account and it seems for whatever reason they are not charging for the remaining 6 months of the contract, there is a credit balance. It seems this was probably overlooked but as this is the case its good news and when it goes off I suppose the freesat will remain. Thats fine we will do with that but I just didnt want to let the tv go wasted if the last 6 months had to be paid for.

I know I could possibly get a deal through my own freesat account for the new sky+hd but I remember when I was a subscribing customer before, the hassle at times, bad customer service, horrendous call costs and wait times for customer service even for things that were not my fault, they have a lasting damaging affect. Then when BT made 0845 calls free within your call plan sky changed all of their phone numbers to 0844 making it clear how important it is to them to continue making more money through customers with every call even if it is mistakes they make on your bill, you call, you pay for thier mistakes

  • Sky do not restart a new 12 months contract when you move house. Unless they have given you a new Sky box and re-installed new dish/cabling for you at no charge when you move house.
