Apologies if I'm stepping on any toes, but I've come accross a case which could really do with our help.
WO1 Mac McGearey is serving with 1 RTR. His daughter, Ciara, desperately needs specialist care, but the family has been shafted by Edinburgh Council who are taking them to court.
When Ciara was 3 days old, she contracted meningitis, leaving her blind, unable to speak and suffering from a number of other disabilities. Since she was 6 months old, she's been receiving specialist treatment from the Royal Blind School in Edinburgh.
However, Mac was posted to England and she obviously had to move schools. Ciara went to a non-specialist school and didn't receive the level of care she needed, so when an opportunity came up for an Edinburgh posting, Mac took it and moved his family back. However, the council refused to fund her place at the Royal Blind School and instead offered a place at another non-specialist school.
An indepdent tribunal concluded unanimously that the Royal Blind School was Ciara's best option, and that had Mac not been in the Army, she would still be attending. They then ordered that Edinburgh Council make funding available immediately.
Rather than comply, Edinburgh council elected to take the case to court at a cost of up to £160,000 in legal fees (Ciara's education at the RBS would be approx. £38k per year).
Mac's walking 500 miles to raise the money needed to keep Ciara in school until the court case.
If you can spare even a couple of quid, please make a donation or sponsor Mac's walk. The appeal is being run by the Scottish Poppy Appeal, and there's more info - pics and the story in Mac's own words - on the links.

In case anyone is wondering, Poppy Scotland is a properly registered charity in Scotland, so there is no problem I can see with having this post on the Charities Board.Signature removed for peace of mind0

rule number one doesnt seem to be followed in this post by savvy_sue?Welcome to the MoneySavingExpert Charity Board
The aim of this is to do anything and everything to help charities, so that collectively others can benefit too.
Already by using this site charities are being helped as there's a substantial charities fund. Also do read the 'Charity Giving' and 'Feed The Starving At No Cost To You' articles.
I decided to start this board as a place where people looking for sponsorship or posting to help charities can do so. Previously these links were banned, but I understand the popularity. However I dont want this to be open to abuse.
To be on this board posts must obey the following rules:
1. Any links must benefit a UK registered charity. The details of the charity number and link to the website must be given.
2. Any sponsorship links must go via the legitimate online charity sponsorship sources such as Justgiving. Direct soliciting for money or sponsorship by any other method isn't permitted as it would be open to abuse.
3. Absolutely no links for personal gain may be posted..... even if the money will be split with a charity..... or even if you 'promise to give all the cash to charity'. There is no way to prove this so it will be deleted.
4. No soliciting for money for any individual will be permitted.
5. We will err on the side of caution, the last thing we want is someone scamming people here.
Now I don't want to sound draconian. This should work well, but it's to benefit genuine, legitimate, mainstream charities. Anything that deviates won't be permitted, it's simply too open to abuse.
I'm initially (April 2006) opening this board as a trial to see (fingers crossed) how it goes.

PS for posting about how to organise charities this isn't the board please see the Small Biz and Charity Organisers' Board. When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.0 -
Hi folks,
I just wanted to interject to say that when mentioning charities, it is absolutel imperative that the person who starts the thread does include a link and the registered charity number.
This is purely to protect other forummers from mistakenly donating to unregistered charities.
It is not the job of the Board Guides to make this happen or post links/numbers for the original poster - they already do enough great work for us.
Sorry to be a bit heavy handed about this but it is an important rule to stick to to keep this board going.
In this one (and only this) instance, i have edited the top post to make it compliant with the rules
