Does changing broadband provider help increase the speed?

  • I was in the same boat as Inactive. I was also with Plusnet and was paying for "up to 8mb". I was mostly getting about 5mb, often less than that. I changed ISP and now get 7.5mb....and I am paying a lot less for it.
Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!

    Hi Fantasyvn,

Are you registered on the TalkTalk foruma? It may be that a profile change would get a better connection speed for you if you are on LLU services. Do you know if you are on LLU? Also if you could let us know your attenuation this would give a better idea of the speeds available to you on a TalkTalk service.

    Cheers

I maybe in a unique position to advise here as I have both TalkTalk and Virgin broadband active at my home

I have always struggled with ADSL speeds because I am a long way from my exchange and this is why I switched to the Virgin 20Mb (and now 50Mb) service. Virgin have always delivered good speeds approaching the advertised, but with 50Mb, it is often the case that there is a slower link somewhere up the chain that means you will not see a singel download at 50Mb, but you can do 10x downloads simultaneously at 5Mb etc etc.

I retained my BT line and switched to TalkTalk and to be honest forgot about the ADSL service that was included until a year or so ago when I decided to activate it. I can connect at 3Mb no problem, but I find I now get very slow web browsing i.e. v high latency and this is not just because I'm comparing with my Virgin connection. My feeling is that TalkTalk have taken on too many customers and it is simply contention that is the issue and would advise TalkTalk to invest some moe in their infrastructure to make customers happier.

I can't complain because TalkTalk is "free" and is only a secondary circuit for me, but if I were paying, I would probably not be as happy

    Hi Elvch01,

It could be that you need a profile change to get the most out of your line. If you register and post at https://www.talktalkmembers.com/forums then we can take a look at your line stats and see if a profile change would get more out of your line.

    Cheers
