Does changing broadband provider help increase the speed?

Hi all, my current ISP is TalkTalk. Using the speed test, I found that my download speed is about 3MB.
Then I tried the estimate at Sky website, which said: "Currently we estimate that the maximum download speed your line could support is between 3.5Mb and 4Mb."
The 02 website doesn't seem to tell which speed you're likely to get if you subscribe to them.
So I don't know if moving to a new provider will help increase my home download speed. Or will it be the same because of my location?

A number of factors influence broadband speed
Distance from exchange, hardware, contention ratio, time of day.
Some ISPs are better than others, you generally get what you paid for also0 -

For once, I have to disagree with you.;)
I changed ISP's 3 years ago, my speeds shot up and have stayed up since, the reason; my former ISP ( Plusnet ) :mad:was throttling speeds at my connection, my current ISP does not use throttling measures.0 -

So very true, but some people want cheap and get cheap and nasty service, then moan about it.0 -
My speeds shot up in December when I changed from 2mbps to 16mbps different product though
now on adsl2
I paid until recently £39 for broadband but I got rock solid connection with no traffic management etc. Tiscali and talk talk of this world tend to be cheap for a reason0 -
Cable is available at my area, so I tried Virgin website, and it said I can get up to 50MB.
The difference is too big. Do you think it is true or does Virgin exaggerate?0 -
Virgin have fibre to the cabinet so can deliver faster speeds than are possible with ADSL.
BT are trialling a similar system, but its not available as yet they have branded it Infinity.

Absolutely true. Your download speeds will rocket.
The 50M service is not (currently) part of the Traffic Shaping nonsense which affects the lower 20M (and lower) speeds.0 -
Enter your postcode and see what it says is available with cable.
