Hi all,
My ISP has advised me that my local exchange has been upgraded and that I can now take advantage of the new ADSL 2+ service. However, they suggest that my download speed (a lowly 2MB) will be unchanged.
Can anyone give me a simple list of pros and cons of the new service that may influence my decision as to whether to switch? I'm thinking of switching purely because the new package offers a higher monthly download allowance for the same monthly price but I'm not really sure what other implications there may be.
Thanks.

Only 2MB
Who is your isp and how far away are you from your telephone exchange
Check here by either entering your tel or postcode...........

From a simple speed/availability perspective.... and as I understand it....
Currently if you are up to around 2.5Km from the exchange you should be able to get the max speed possible on ASDLmax On ASDL2 the flat rate limit up to 2.5km approx will no longer apply and you will genuinely get faster speeds the closer you are to the exchange. So if you live close to an exchange and speed matters ADSL2 will be an advantage.
If you are between 3.0 and 5km you will not notice any difference between ADSLmax and ADSL2.
Around 5.0 Km is the current limit for ADSLmax and anyone living more than this distance from the local exchange is likely to have difficulties in obtaining a connection - or if they do it will drop out etc regularly. In this case there will be an advantage in ADSL2 and it is expected to be available up to 6.5Km from the exchange.
As is usual I suppose I better put in a disclaimer that some individual lines are better quality than others (as are the junction boxes!) and the above figures are best estimates from publicly available sources and you may get a better or worse service depending on various local conditions. Distance from the exchange are following the route of the cable and not 'as the crow flies'.0 -

I know, pitiful isn't it?!
Well, as the crow flies I am 1.99km from the exchange. I can only assume, given the poor speed, that the actual route the line takes involves a detour to Lands End, London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, quick trip across the water to the gold old US of A, and then to my house!!
BTW, my ISP is IDNet.«««¤ Richie ¤»»»0 -
My Dad was stuck at 512kbps until I got him to sign up for Plusnet's ADSL2+ trial which increased the speed to ~1.5Mbps. I don't know if this is a typical improvement but it shouldn't make things any slower for you though.
My Dad is envious of my 8Mbps link but his exchange is getting Fibre-to-the-Cabinet soon so I guess he'll have the bragging rights then!0 -
I live about 15 minutes walks way from exchange and get around 15-16mbps. I use to get 2mbps its hell of a lot quicker even at peak times and I didnt get bad contention with old provider. I now on LLU exchange and pay less per month with faster speeds. I am on 20:1 contention as I got business adsl
I upgraded my router to adsl2 on

Richie (UK),
the best thing to do is to post up your line stats, obtained from your router. If unsure how, see links:-
http://www.dslzoneuk.net/adsl_line_stats.php or
http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/index.htm for advice on how to.
It's only from your line stats will we be able to advise accurately on your situation. There's also a good speed estimator here:-
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php but you'll still need your line stats to use it (it works on your downstream attenuation).
Unfortunately, ChiefGrasscutter's advice above on distances over 3KM not seeing an improvement on ADSL2+ is plain wrong.....see my result below:-
Estimation of your maximum rate adaptive adsl speed Downstream
Attenuation 48 dB Approx Line Length 3.5km
dslMAX 5312 kbps IP Profile 4500 kbps
adsl2+ (21CN) 5984 kbps IP Profile 5000 kbps
adsl2+ (LLU) 5984 kbpsThroughput 5296 kbps
I'm on MAX at the moment, sync @ 5408 kb/s, get actual of 4.6Meg downstream, and am waiting for my (LLU) ISP to offer 2+ to get the extra 0.75 Meg
So, get those line stats up on here and we can take a look
edit - there is a great graph somewhere on kitz's site which shows attenuation plotted against speed for adsl, adsl2+, REadsl, etc, just can't put my finger on it at the moment  will get it eventually...........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Hi guys - apologies for jumping in one this one, but can someone check these stats for me?
Configured Current
Line Status --- SHOWTIME
Link Type --- Fast Path
Stream Type
Actual Data Rate
Up Stream Down Stream
448 (Kbps.) 5024 (Kbps.)
Operation Data
Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 12 dB 24 dB
Attenuation 91 dB --- dB
Don't know what any of it means, but any comments would be appreciated.
How do I find out how far I am away from the exchange?
::edit::
I'm with Tiscali on LLU if it helps.:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -
I'm sorry my comments on not being able to notice any improvement in speed between ADSLmax to ADSL2 above a line distance of around 3.0km from your local exchange have been deemed wrong
I refer you to the producers of the graph included on this web page as follows..........

DSL Driver Version: AnnexA version - A2pB022g.d20e
DSL VPI/VCI: 0/38
DSL Status: ShowtimeRetrain Reason: 0
DSL Mode: G.DMT
DSL Channel: FAST
DSL Upstream Rate: 288 Kbps
DSL Downstream Rate: 2272 Kbps

The attenuation figure gives the following result @ Kitz:
Downstream Attenuation 58 dB Approx Line Length 4.2km
