  • Not sure if it's been mentioned already but have you tried adding your mum/dad as a named driver? It might bring the price down a little bit

Start by reading http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/compare-cheap-car-insurance Remember to check third party fire and theft as this can be cheaper than third party only. Try an arrangement of adding parents as named drivers to your policy (as suggested above) and possibly boyfriend too. Also try using the job checker in the first link.

I would also suggest trying www.ecarinsurance.co.uk directly as when they were competitive for me they unusually gave much higher quotes on comparison sites.

Don't worry about spending over the value of the car itself. Insurance is a necessary cost of motoring whatever car you have. The fuel you put through it will also soon outweigh the cost of the car. My first car was only worth about £300, but I think my insurance cost me £800.

I'm no expert but I have a feeling that only having an automatic license puts the cost up somewhat.

I had my parents as named drivers for a while, shaved off a couple of hundred pounds from the quote.

Not sure if it helps if you've had a licence for a while, but doing Pass Plus really brought down my insurance too (the course costs £120 but reduced my premium by £200).

Insurance for automatics is usually cheaper, having an auto only licence does not affect the quote.
3k is steep, can I ask how many companies returned a price on your quote?
Looks like an answer or two stopped them giving an online quote.

Recheck your details, make sure its not down as modified etc and try again.

In addition what job title did you put down? This could be the problem.

Try Elephant/Admiral/Bell/Diamond (same company, different quotes) and Aviva

Those quotes are insane - I was only £1200 at 18 for a group 5 car with 0 NCB and a fault claim. I'm now £698 at 19 with 1y NCB and a fault claim on a group 6, £6000 car.

A lot of different factors make up the insurance quote, where you live, type of car, where car is kept, mileage, what car is used for........

That just might be the average rates for first time insurance.

When I was 18 I had a 1974 mini, cost me £200 for the car, £1,500 to insure, tpft. I know at the same time I got a quote on a Corsa Sport (worth about £4,000 at the time?), and that quote came out at £5,000.

That was 9 years ago, my insurance now is £300 ish fully comp on a vw golf.
  • QUINN - direct alright, if not down right rude, but very quick on chasing up money, even if they get dates wrong and blame you. Pretty poor at paying out any money, either on theft, or non fault accident. Pay cheap get cheap. GIVE THEM THE WIDEST BERTH POSSIBLE -NOTHING COMPENSATES FOR THE HASSLE. sorry but we are mad.
