Somerfield Till Receipts

Options
Please be aware that, if you use chip and pin in some Somerfield Supermarkets, the till receipt prints out your full credit card number and its expiry date. If anyone found this in your bin, they would have enough information for a mail order shopping spree. (I posted this under 'credit cards' at first - I didn't intend to 'spam', I am just very new and didn't know that the 'Warnings' Forum existed. Sorry)

Most credit cards are verified either by the PIN if the customer is present or the CV number if the customer isn't .

Unless they can get the company to accept a signature, most of whom wont. the full number isn't as a path to instant money in the way it used to be, however, I do think its careless of the company to actually print the details on the receipt, in full.

Nando's print it too on the till receipt but not the payment receipt.

It's not illegal. It just recommends in your credit card merchant set up details that if your using your own equipment (ie somerfield use their own tills), that all customer facing reciepts should have the middle card details blanked.

All store copies are still complete and legible.

Rather worryingly, a Tesco petrol station recently gave me a store copy of someone's PIN verified card details (attached to my receipt).

I shred all my card receipts once the payments have gone through my account. I noticed a while back that some places put **** instead of the last 4 numbers, but others use them for the rest and leave the last 4 printed out. You'd only need a couple of receipts to get the whole number and other details.

Quite a lot of places still don't have chip and pin, in the past 2 days I've been in 2 shops that still only do sales by signature.

If that is the case you have been given the piece of paper that's supposed to go in the till by mistake (assuming you mean when you pay by chip and PIN - if it's a signature then the full number is not printed.)

Just been to Somerfield and paid by chip n pin. My receipt records only the the last 4 numbers of my card and the expiry date.
