Help cleaning pillowcases

My husband works as a gardener and even though he washes his head every day, his pillowcase has ended up light brown in the middle (a bit like men's collars but spread over a larger area). I tried soaking it in a soap solution and rubbing it with household soap but it still looks terrible. I don't want to use bleach as it's blue/white checks but am at a loss as to what else to try.
Any suggestions.

I have a similar problem - my OH has dry skin and slaps loads of E45 on his face after washing it, then comes to bed and it all soaks into the pillow cases, which leaves my lovely cream pillow cases with a sort of greyish greasy film on them (nice!).
do you think Stardrops could help this? what would you do with it - soak the pillowcases in a solution of it?0 -
Have you tried washing the pillowcases on a hot wash?

How hot? I'm always scared of doing hot washes in case it shrinks things.
Just read the label and it says 50%cotton/50%polyester and that it should be washed at 40 degrees. Would it be safe to wash it hotter?0 -

When you've got them clean,(!!!) a quick spray with spray on starch and then a quick iron, will help to keep them clean. The starch stops the dirt penetrating the fibres. Just a quick spray shouldn't make them too stiff - this soon wears off any way! HTH0

I always wash bedding at 60 degrees C - whether it's 100% cotton or 50% cotton 50% polyester. It's the only way to kill of dust mites etc and should be much better at cleaning your sheets.0
