Question about iphone tracking app

hubby has just phoned to say a friend of his had just called him from his iphone and said I know you're not far away blah blah, when hubby asked how he knew where he was (he told dh the roundabout he had just gone round), he said he has got an app on his iphone that shows him where ppl are by their mobile number.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Surely it's an invasion of privacy? Is there anyway of preventing yourself being tracked by this app? He is on contract with o2 and has a sony eriksson phone (cant remember the model).

Thank you.

It might have been the goggle application, google maps. There are applications that you install on your phone where you can say where you are, thus letting your friends know. Obviously if a phone has inbuilt GPS they can do real time tracking at the cost of battery life, GPS + data connection chews up your battery life. If he has the application installed and logged into his google account, he let them track him, so not an invasion.

Only the network operator can track a phones location using its mobile masts.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

Thanks for the reply, he doesn't have anything installed on his phone, it's just a bulk standard SE Walkman, his friend told him it was done through an app on his iphone, he told him how he had also tracked someone on a night out when they got seperated and it located it so it is through the iphone not my husbands.

Unless there's something installed on both the phone that's doing the tracking and the phone that being tracked, it can't be done.
The gps side of google maps can do it, but you have to allow the programme to install and allow it to send your info to google.
The networks don't allow cell site info to be accessed by any old app, even on the iPhone.
