Changing wheels

I must admit I didn't think the old ones were too bad when they were clean. Needed a few more inches in my life thoughThis is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0

Your friend at work is wrong, simple as.
It's not wrong, it's jsut a bit too much.
There's nothing "wrong" with putting axle stands under the car to change a wheel.
It's not necessary and will take longer....but it's not "wrong"
Personally I put the wheel I've just taken off under the sill but I don't use stands.

Just a matter of jacking the car a hell of a lot of times and using the spare a few times in place of whichever wheel is missing.
For example:
Jack the front of the car.
Front wheel off, spare wheel on.
Lower the car.
Jack the rear of the car.
Rear wheel off, front wheel on.
Lower the car.
Jack the front of the car.
Spare wheel off, rear wheel on.
Etc...
Long winded way to do it but the only way with a standard car jack.
Unless you jack the car up to find the chassis is so stiff, both side wheels come off the ground. :-D That makes swapping front to back a doddle.0 -
Usually you're told to recheck the wheel nuts after 50 miles. Personally (since I had it happen to me a lot sooner than 50 miles) I would check after about 10, if I thought there was anything wrong. And I now ALWAYS go round and check them one last time before putting the kit away.
Take it from me, there is nothing funny about your wheel coming off when you're driving:eek:
On the upside, it was easy to get the car onto the jack even though it was only on 3 wheels at the time
I once lost a rear wheel off an MGB GT when I was being towed back home. My fault, it had been in a workshop for months, and I kept taking the wheels off to do jobs on the brakes and suspension.
There I was, being towed happily along, when the car started vibrating, then the rear quarter hit the ground, the tow rope snapped (my mate carried on for a while oblivious to the situation), then a wheel flew past the passenger window and ended up going through someone's hedge!!
Anyway, you know when you have to ask for your football back, when you have kicked it over next door's garden, well this was quite similar in a weird kind of way.
I only managed to find three out of the four wheel nuts, and we continued our journey home.
The moral of the story is:
Never go anywhere without making sure your nuts are fully tightened.;)0
