i havent haaad sky tv for about five years recently i have had a letter from a debt collection agency saying that i owe £38.50, i think this is unreasonable, do i have to pay this???

    And did you owe them £38.50 five year ago :P.

    Plus sky cant put it on your credit file so i would just ignore it.

    You haven't said whether or not you do owe this money. Reasonableness depends on your answer!

    Sounds like you cancelled your DD with Sky around the same time as you gave your 30 days notice. They still have to charge you for the 30 days viewing.

    My friend did this and had a debt collectors demanding £40 (at least one PPV movie on there).

    You should only cancel the DD once the service is over, just in case the company needs to refund you or take further money from you.

    Plus cancelling the DD doesn't mean you have cancelled your agreement to Sky. I got this a lot when I worked for a mobile network. Customers think if they cancel their DD, it will cancel their service - WRONG!

    They can pursue a debt for 6 years. So if you owe it, pay it. If not, ask them for proof of the debt.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
