Sansung Genio Touch as an internet modem/dongle?

Hello,

I am looking at buying the Samsung Genio Touch and I was wondering whether anyone knows if I can use this phone as an internet modem/dongle for my laptop? I know that I can access internet via the phone but it would be good if i could connect it to my laptop and get internet via my phone. I have googled it but am still unsure whether this would work or not.

Any replies would be great thanks :)

You can do it but its MASSIVELY expensive. Why not just get a dongle, much faster and they start at £5 per month. Also avoid pay as you go ones, theyre a rip off too!

Not sure what you're talking about here. There's no difference in cost between using a SIM in a tethered phone (i.e. a phone used as a modem) and using the same SIM in a dongle. You seem to have confused the tariff with the method of connection. Having said that, I generally prefer a dongle to a tethered phone.

Which tariff works out best for you depends entirely on what your usage pattern is. I currently have a SIM-only tariff with Orange which includes 500MB data per month. Not very much, but if I just use my phone as a modem occasionally to check my email or suchlike it's not a problem.

If your data requirements are modest you can probably use a "normal" SIM card & tariff (i.e. one intended for use in a phone); if they are greater you'll be better off using a dedicated data plan. Either way, it's a good idea to prevent your laptop from downloading updates etc while on a mobile connection.

  • The Samsung Genio Touch has Bluetooth and with a bit of messing it should be possible to create a Bluetooth Dial Up Network connection (if you buy a Bluetooth dongle I've been very pleased with my Belkin one).

From a bit of Googling the phone seems to support DUN as a Bluetooth profile so it looks hopeful. However getting Bluetooth DUN to work can be a bit of a challenge.

My doubts are that it doesn't seem to be a 3G phone so the overall performance might be disappointing.
