Experiences of porting your number

I wanted to know what people's experiences of having their number ported has been. I'm porting from o2 to orange (due to orange giving me a better contract for my money) and my port started yesterday. My o2 phone lost signal at about 7am yesterday and the sim is no longer recognised, and so far I am unable to recieve calls/texts for my old number to my new orange phone. I though porting only took a couple of hours, but obviously that was naive of me! Customer service said that it can take up to 48 hours so hopefully there will some switch overnight (or is that wishful thinking?). Anyone else had long port times or problems with their numbers being ported? Thanks x

It can help to keep switching the phone off for while and back on again.

It should take a few hours, but it can sometimes take longer. . .

It is unusual for the losing operator to disconnect service before the new operator has connected the number.

If you make a call from your Orange phone, what number is sent to the person you are calling? The original Orange number or the ported one from O2?

Hi dave_dph, if I call from the orange phone it shows the original orange number. I'm a bit worried that the port hasn't been done properly :(

Yes something isn't right and O2 should not have closed the account! Usually on the day of the port the new operator will configure the network to send the ported number from your new phone. Your old number will therefore be active on both phones. Once this is done the porting process continues until the new provider has everything set up and then the old provider closes the account.

If I were you I'd call Orange again and ask them to check exactly what is happening. At this time of night they will probably say that the porting team have finished, but I'd still give it a try. I have never known the losing network to disconnect service before the gaining network has the ported number active. Having said that, nothing would surprise me with O2!

I phoned up orange, and whilst everything was set up correctly it had for some reason been put on hold. The very helpful man at customer services fixed it and 5 minutes later my number had been changed and I can make/recieve calls and texts using my old number. Thanks for your help Jon and Dave!

I ported mine from Tesco mobile to T-Mobile, and it was fine. I had to use the T-mobile assigned number for a few days, but was only without service for a couple of minutes once it had been done.

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Glad it worked out for you! So it was Orange that was at fault and not O2.
