Sorry, I misunderstood the website. Where it says that BT is the sole provider of bb services I thought that meant that BT was the sole provider of bb services. I thought all other providers were LLUs and therefore not available. Hartington if anyone would like to check I've got this right, though I'm around 5 miles away from the exchange and much nearer another exchange. I'm wondering if there's any way of linking to that much nearer exchange.

I think I may be losing the will with this, despite all you wonderful helpful people!! Though I'm beginning to understand better - why is it so complicated?

    Thanks yet again

samknows does not list all providers using BT Wholesale, as there are hundreds and they are available on all exchanges, so no point. Your nearest geographical exchange is not necessarily the one you are connected to. If you put your no. into samknows and it says you are on Hartington then that's what you are on. No-one else can check for you without knowing your phone no.
No you can't switch to another exchange, your cable goes to the one you're already on and that is not movable.
PS: Hartington is indeed non-LLU and with only 532 subscribers, always will be. So the price you pay will be broadly similar with most ISP's, around £12 is typical. Have a look at Plusnet, as your first year cost will be only £8.12pm (with first 3 month's discount and Quidco cashback).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
