i was speaking to someone today.... and they said they go to newport regular to the matalan surplus outlet, and she was saying that there is loads of bargins.... clothes for a £1.00 or less.....does anyone know if this is right...and has anyone had some good bargins.... as if it is good it might be worth me taking a trip up, and start looking for christmas pressies etc.....and also is it only clothes there or do they do the household items as well....

I wouldnt bother my MIL went the other day and she said it was like a junk shop..she would not be going there again. I would go to the one in Cardiff Newport Road much better

Totally agree with barber1982. Mind you this scruffy out of town store fits in well with the overall trading and shopping plan for Newport - charity shops, £1 shops, agressive charity fund raisers and of course the Gilesport 'closing down sale' which has been going for months with the store still packed full of new stock. Go to Cardiff instead.

Lets hope they improve the city for the Ryder cup 2010. Newport has a lot of potential

thanks for that.... the only time i went to newport was to hobbycraft....as i am from swansea..... we have a normal matalan here.... but this lady said it was a surplus outlet... so loads of bargins... clothes at 75p and £1.00, and that she spend £20.00 and had loads of stuff, so it looks as thought its the dumping ground then for stuff that they cant sell anywhere else....
oh well... i will not be rushing up there then......

  • I'd tend to agree - Newport isn't the prettiest place for shopping. That being said, despite the fairly awful lay out of Matalan (and similar clothes shops around Newport) with clothes in heaps, on the floor, etc - the clothes themselves aren't that awful. if you're shopping for young kids, it's great because hey, you don't actually need the clothes to last that long! We got a pair of nighties for my 1 year old for 75p earlier this year.
It is a fairly depressing shop, but if you can get over the aesthetic faults, it's not all that bad. For Newport. :D
    Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. I personally went to Matalan in Newport and took my mother and we had fantastic bargains. One day we went and all of the jeans and casual tops were reduced to a pound. It can be a jumble sale at times but hey ho at the price you are paying for the clothes in there it cant be all that bad can it?
I agree maybe Cardiff and Llansamlet stores might be better layed out but your getting the stock in Newport at 75% discount.

anyone know which is the biggest south walian matalan?

we went on a road trip to brislington yesterday evening in hunt of a toy from toysrus which is like gold dust. after our victory, we went to the matalan there which was huuuge. all the clothes looked great spaced out properly instead of packed in together like in cardiff. i'd love to shop at a store like that
