Young driver car insurance

I'm trying to get a "sensible" insurance quote for my 17 year old son, who passed his test 4 months ago, to drive a 6 year old Fiesta.
The cheapest so far has been close on £4K (the highest was the AA who quoted £11,951.82 fully comp :rotfl:). The car is worth £3K to £3.5K.
I've tried various on-line quoting sites, but wondered if anyone can suggest some specialist brokers who could help.
Also, the car is registered in my wifes name, would it make any difference if it was registered in his name (it won't be his though).
Any suggestions (apart from the obvious - give up!) would be much appreciated.

WOW
Which fiesta? My son insured a 1.4 Polo just after passing his test for £950 (was 4 years ago though) with More Than. He was registered keeper & we added his mum as a named driver.
I seem to remember the named driver made a difference to the quote!
It's been a long time so I could be talking pooMight be worth a try though.
Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Have you done a confused.com quote? They normally throw up the best prices for me. Also, whatever quote you get from the comparison site, go to the site directly and see if it's any cheaper. It often is.
I find Admiral the best for me being a young driver.
I paid £1300 for a 1litre mini in my first year (2006 aged 17). The next year I got a 1.8 Peugeot 306 (2007 aged 18) so the prices will drop eventually. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0 -
Forget the comparison sites they aren't accurate and can leave out the best deals.
Try:
Bell Car Insurance
Elephant
Admiral
Quinn Direct
Swiftcover
Make sure you add your wife as a named driver, and you as well, provided you both have good records.0 -
Bell target youngsters with little or no claims, so deffo a good place to start.
If the car isn't his anyway, and likely to be sharing driving with your wife (as you say won't be his, and car in wifes name), why don't you put wife as main driver and him as named? Insurance quote will at least halve.0 -
The reality is that there is no such thing as a "young driver friendly" insurer (the term is merely advertising terminology to look good in the back of Max Power).
Is the car his or yours and are you trying to insure third party or fully comp? Fully comp quotes for young drivers are, by and large, a waste of time. The excesses are deliberately inflated for young drivers to discourage claims and in truth, the better option could be to get TP insurance on a banger that you wouldn't lose sleep walking away from in an accident. It will still be a four figure premium mind.
If it helps, Quinn Direct were the best prices for my younger brother (and they dealt with a claim pretty well). Norwich Union were the best for me at 18.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I would say try Admiral or an I-Kube policy for the cheapest quotes. The I-Kube policy i had when i was 18, on a 1.2 micra. Cost around £980 but you can't drive between 11pm and 5am.0

Bell, Elephant and Admiral are all the same company, so the quoted price generally only varies a little. Bell are always the cheapest for me (but I'm not young).0 -
put one of his parents on as a NAMED driver, this can reduce the premium by 40%0

Thanks for the replies.
Still not had much luck yet, with most quotes in the £4K to £5K range. At this rate he'll have to learn to walk :j
I can't understand why insurance companies have jacked their prices so much recently. When I first looked over last summer, we were getting quotes of around £2K to £2.5K.
It almost makes driving without insurance seem like a logical choice :eek:0 -
