Self cleaning glass solution

Hi

I wonder if any of you knowledgeable people have had any experience with a self cleaning glass spray? We have recently had a glass balcony fitted and once the scaffold has been removed it will become difficult to clean and is very much open to the elements so will become very dirty.

I have googled and found a product called rainracer but wondered if anybody had tried anything of this nature. I wish I had thought of it prior to ordering and ordered the self cleaning glass itself (don't know how good it is though) within the balcony but I didn't think of the cleaning issue previously.

Many Thanks for reading this and I hope you can help.

Kind Regards

Where did you get your glass balcony from ,i can't picture it but wonder if it what i need ?

Sorry can't help with you question.
  • Its a juliet balcony, not full balcony. I had a local firm make it bespoke (sorry wouldn't recommend due to unreliability).

Any local engineering company would be able to make one as it just consists of a stainless steel bar top and bottom with 12mm glass slotted in and four brackets at the corners. The company made the brackets to suit my property but I think the bars are standard. It looks really nice though!

If you ebay glass balconies on Ebay you can see the idea.

    Hope this helps!

you saying about rainracer cant help u there but have you considered something like http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_753301_langId_-1_categoryId_165682
from halfords use it for cars windscreens leaves streak free and has a rain repelant in it might do the job better? for £7.99

The treated glass surface is then easier to clean as the water repellent technology helps prevent dirt, bugs and traffic film from sticking to the glass. ICE glass cleaner can be safely used on both internal and external glass surfaces.
  • There are two options we use for commercial self cleaning glass.

The first is a specialist glass such as Pilkington Activ or Saint Gobian Bioclean.

As the job is now completed Im guessing you need a plan B! We also use a product call Ritec Clearshield. This is a spray on coating so would be ideal in your case. Probably worth emailing Ritec direct for a local quote.

Just tried two different sorts of car rain repellent on our patio doors, ie, one on each half, as a comparison. Both rubbish, even though applied as per instructions. Don't use it on the car anyway, so don't know if it would be any better, but I doubt it.

Id be interested if anyone knows a product you can apply yourself and which works. Son's flat has a wrap round glass balcony near the Thames and it gets dirty very quickly.

I have often wondered about the practicality of the acres of glass that you see in houses featured in programs such as programs as Grand Designs. They always seem to gloss over the problems of keeping the glass (both inside and out) clean.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

    Self-cleaning glass doesn't. Marketing hype.

Because it doesn't. Put the self cleaning stuff "n" feet up on a high rise and it will not appear to hold the dirt in the same way that ordinary glass does. But it will NOT be completely clean. Put it low down where you can physically see it and it will be clear to you why I say this.

Use it on a conservatory roof expecting it to keep itself clean and and you'll be bitterly disappointed. Anyway bird poo is bird poo - if you get my drift.

    Cheers
