My old PE teacher never changed the oil in his Lada Riva. Beats the hell out of me how it never failed on him.... :)

One of my mates said his did never changed the oil on his cars, because he reckoned they burnt so much oil, that he only had to keep topping them up with new stuff!

That Beemer is an absolute disgrace though, fancy treating one of those lovely engines in that way.
I reckon they could have used drain cleaner to flush it out (just a guess, never tried it), because it is Sulphuric Acid based.

I thought like that in 1989-1990 when I had a 1L per 1500 miles oil burning Vauxhal Cavalier 1.6 SR. This car had an oil pressure guage that used to read under 1/4 scale.
I had a recon engine fitted afer a while, new oil filter obvisouly, then the oil pressure guage went to the top of the scale.
Lesson learned, clogged oil filters severely restrict oil flow so you have to change them on schedule even if you do have a "oil burner".

Eek! Don't think I'd be putting anything acid based into an engine with aluminium block or head - or in fact any engine belonging to me :D

I've seen worse, back in the days of 'black sludge' generating oils, that doesn't seem to happen any more. A Renault 11 with so much sludge in the head we were scooping it out with teaspoons all afternoon.

Once the heads all cleaned out I'd idle that engine for a while, with fresh cheap oil, then drop the sump and clean out all the crud thats washed down from the head. Then a longish run with fresh oil and a couple of pints of ATF (loads of detergent in ATF) and change the oil again and call it done.

I might also stop off and check the PX value on the car... :p

    wow it still goes on

i picked up a new car a few years back and the dealer had just taken in a nissan 300zx biturbo, the car was 3 years old, had done 60k and had never been serviced, the engine had finally given up and seized ...
There should be a basic maintenance test before people are allowed to buy nice cars like that. Sob.

i remember a nissan bluebird a friend got for nothing from one of his firends, the guy he got it from had it 8 years,he never had the oil changed when he had it,so when my mate got it i suggested he should let me do a service on it,he agreed but was in no rush, eventually after about 3 months of him driving it i got to service it,the oil was like tar when it came out, it didn't even look as good as those bmw's pictures. ichanged the oil 3 times before it even started to look normal, but it still ran great before and after the service.
his fuel economy did improve though!
