It is :(. It was my eldest that had it, and I had no idea, just that every feeding time was a total battle. The hv just kept saying colic. By the time she was 3 months old, I had PND and had begun to not want my own baby near me. Getting a diagnosis was fantastic but it took me a long time to get over the PND. Had she been my second or subsequent baby, I think I would have known something wasnt right a lot earlier!

Lolly - J has started sort of waking at 2am, 4am & 6am, it's more like crying in his sleep but fortunately he settles when I pop his dummy in. I've put it down to teething as he's exceptionally grumpy right now!
I give him the Ashton & Parsons powder before bed along with a dab of teething gel.

J is on 2 meals a day - lunch & tea and takes anywhere between 23-30ozs of milk. I dropped the dream feed about 10 days ago & he now goes from 8pm til 9am without a bottle UNLESS he has a poor milk intake the day before!

  • Hi, I haven't had a chance to read the other replies.

Just wanted to say perhaps change the times you are giving food. Often little ones need to snack big time in the run up to going to bed. Perhaps bottle, food and bottle in the space of three hours?

Also have you thought about going back to a dream feed while he is so hungry, a growth spurt requires a lot of food to sustain the growth, perhaps sitting quietly in the bed room and just lifting, changing nappy and giving a bottle at 10:30pm will do it.

Also be aware, they start to get used to routine, so you might find out of habit little one has started to wake.

I agree.. back to the bath time, wind down, bed time routine. I'd also stop with the food.. totally. my last 3 were 11.5 months and 10.5 months and 9 months (Had silent relfux so had been having thickeners in her milk since a few weeks old) respectively when they were weaned. DS3 was 2.5.. he had 'issues' so it can be done. Mainly because I didn't have time to 'wean' them I wqited until they did it themselves. In China babies are rarely weaned before a year old... bit of useless trivia there!

Have you tried giving him and extra blanket? He may be cold
Have you tried moving the orientation of the cot? It works, no idea why, but it does
Have you considered moving him out of your room? If he is a lightish sleeper you could be disturbing him
Teething? Anbesol is stuff of the Gods!!!
Has he been unwell recently? This can often throw sleep patterns out, it just takes time to get back into the routine.

CP - Good point about the cluster feeding!
J has a bottle and tea around 5.30pm then his last bottle at around 8pm.
J feeds every 3hours during the day so
    9am - bottle
    11.45am - bottle & lunch
    2.30pm - bottle
    5.30pm - bottle & tea
    8pm - bottle

I'm not getting into the early weaning argument sufficed to say i had the HV's blessing on it. He is pooping fine and doesnt have collic when i say he is grumpy it is because he wants to play and we wont so he throws a paddy he is quite happy if we sit there all night with him. I did initially put it down to teething as he was chewing on everything in site for a few days and has had rosy cheeks queue the teething powders and odd dose of calpol but its not consistant i can tell when he is in discomfort and he isnt 99% of the time.

As i said i thinks its just a faze and he will grow out of it in the mean time i just needed to vent ;-) thank you all xx

Well would you believe it i put my finger in bubs mouth to find a a tiny weany little sharp bit just starting to break through his gum so although he hasnt been teething per sa IE: red cheeks and wingeing in pain it looks like he has been teething and thats why he wont sleep it obviously been annoying him. My DD was the same we never knew she was teething until her teeth came through. At least now i have a reason for his sleepless night :-) xx

I read the other night that sleeplessness is a symptom of teething so sounds like it was that! Glad it looks like it's resolved. :)

lolly - my next door neighbour is a peadiatric nurse and she told me when DD was the same as your DS "Give her a dose of calpol - if it works then it's probably teething. If it doesn't then it's probably routine... " I hate to say it... but she was right ;)
We have 2 beautiful teeth (came through about a week ago... at just under 8 months old... :)) and looks like another 2 coming through ;) She's got grinchy again last couple of days so guessing they're about to make an appearance ;)
