Share purchase offer from Canada

Hello - I'm hoping to get some help here,

Myself and my brother purchased some shares some years back, they were only a few pence each. He recieved a telephone call from Canada from a Halsbury Finance enquiring about the shares and wanting to purchase them for a premimum over what we paid. Has anyone else had this?
The company comes up on a google, but my spidey sense in tingling! I'm pretty sure this is going to be dodgy, but we dont want to look a gifthorse in the mouth if it legit.

Yes it's a much used scam. Carefully looking gift horses in the mouth is a sound idea.

Generally speaking, if someone calls you up out of the blue asking you to make any sort of financial transaction with them, ignore it.

If you want to sell your shares, go to a real broker.

So the land is worth as much as your shares!
  • Hi, my dad has had a similar experience, they are asking for a £6,000 bond in order to processed, and are offering a price of 70pence each for 150,000 shares curently trading at 0.25pence. I think it's a scam, as the first thing they did was make him sign a disclaimer saying he would not contact anyone about it.
The company is called Halsbury Finance ltd. Anyone got any suggestions about what he should do about it?

Yes, if he has not sent them any money already then do not send any. Do not give in to any threats they make. Tell him to hang up if they call.

If he has already sent them money then start worrying. Report it to the local police. Also report it to the City of London Police (Operation Archway) here http://www.cityoflondon.police.uk/CityPolice/ECD/Fraud/boilerroom.htm

Note this is called a "recovery room" scam.
  • Hi

I got a letter today from a Canadian company claiming a win in their international prize award, I can see by the letter that is looks like a scam, the letter was heading for the shredder, but the name on the letter rang a bell. The name IJ UWAT appeared a few months ago on a cash for gold kit that came through the door. I have never had anything like this before and I am worried this could be some kind of identity fraud?

    Andy advice would be great.

Well I'm not Andy but in my opinion I don't see what you are worrying about. It's not your name, it is just a made up name on a scam letter. There is no reason to think they know anything more about you than the address they sent the letter to.
  • Sorry for my typo,
So am I correct in thinking they just randomly pick an address?
