VGA is more than capable of handling 1920x1080p, which in TV terms is full HD. Check your TV manual to see if it actually takes that resolution in via VGA. If your laptop has a Blu Ray drive, surely it has an HDMI output, which will carry digital picture and sound to the TV and would be far preferable. Any VGA lead should do, if you have some lying around, try it, if the pic doesn't look great (shadowing or colour bleed) buy a higher quality one.
scottishblonde - that's not a phono lead, phono is the red and white plugs. you're talking about a 3.5mm minijack (or 'small headphone socket').

True - I've just got a bad habit of calling all sound cables phono cables!
