I have just done the same and found a website that sells the cable(s) you will require including advice about different cables/connectors,I don't think we are allowed to post links on this forum but if you pm me I will pass the information on.
I have no connection to them but found it helpful and very reasonable in price.

hi, my laptop is a sony vaio nw20ef, with a vga output, and my tv is a LG 42" 1080p LCD. I have seen a couple of leads on ebay but they say that 'this wire is not for connecting your laptop to a TV???
  • Simplest solution is if your TV has a VGA socket on the back get a VGA cable and use that. You will also need a phono cable for sound (looks like a headphone socket on both ends).

Bump... Will the VGA be ok for HD films to watch on big screen instead of the laptop screen?
  • I wouldn't use this cable, it can have a lot of compatability issues and you will still need a separate sounds cable. Like I said before... does your TV have a VGA socket on the back?

I use a VGA cable to connect my HD media PC to my TV, absolutely no problems, just set the resolution correctly (1920*1080 for full HD)
  • So I'd recommend a VGA cable like this one, and a phono cable like this one.

Check that you have the right sockets on your TV before you buy anything though, and make sure you get a cable long enough to reach from where the laptop will be to where the TV is.
  • You need a Sony PS3.

iPlayer is native and everything else (tv, movies etc) can be streamed effortlessy and wireless (providing you have a wireless router) to your TV without buying silly cables and placing your laptop in a specific spot.
