I bought a car today which recieved it's first MOT yesterday - no advisory notice issued etc.

So why did you buy it, if it is so bad? Surely you checked it and noted all these faults?

I agree that they don't always seem all that: When I took my car for an MOT last year it passed but had an advisory notice saying rear wheel bearings would need doing before next MOT. This years MOT nothing was mentioned and wheel bearings have not been touched!!
Have had this happen with other things on other cars in the past too.

The first time I had my Landy MoTd it failed for having no rear reflectors. This despite it having passed at least 6 MOTs since being cast. It was easier to screw a couple of reflectors to the rear panel than argue the toss with the tester.

Three years ago it got an advisory on pitted front swivels. I was advised by the local specialist to do nothing. The swivels haven't been mentioned since.

MoTs are, to some extent, in the opinion of the tester.

My point is - the MOT system in the UK must be a complete joke if a car that would clearly fail the test can be issued a certificate.

Not that bothered about my case - more worried about more serious cases that this kind of behaviour must produce.
The MOT is a somewhat objective test in some ways. It's often open to debate what constitutes, for example, an excessively corroded brake pipe.

    No need to shout.

And next year you will probably be on here moaning about the amount of work and cost to get your car through an MOT.

Yes it's objective but - the handbrake does not hold the car until it is at the end of it's working travel and even then I doubt it's efficent enough - FAIL, no argument

The wiper blade does not clear water from the screen (at all) - FAIL, no argument

At my car's first MOT test it went in with a perfect hand brake and came out of the test failing on the hand brake. When I checked it after yes it was at the end of the travel, I can only presume something the MOT tester did caused it to happen, possibly the cables stretching or the cable mountings giving way. Either way it cost next to nothing to sort. Wiper blades are just a couple of quid in Wilkinsons/Tesco.

Do you have the print out for this? So we can see what the effort was recorded as?

Did you tell Trading Standards that when they were approving you? Pretty sure they'd have a rethink....

No. They just send in a duff car every now and then to make sure were doing our job. Never had a problem yet. The Trading Standards Scheme was set up in 1995 in our town and there is only 20 odd garages on it.
