MOT worth the paper it's written on?

How much of a joke is the MOT system?

I bought a car today which recieved it's first MOT yesterday - no advisory notice issued etc.

The handbrake is AWFUL and the passenger side wiper blade does nothing.

The dealer is rectifying the issues but !!!!!!? How the hell did it pass a MOT yesterday?! :rotfl::rotfl:

Was the MOT done at the same place as where the car is being sold by any chance?
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

Nope, at a garage about a mile down the road.

A car with a dodgy handbrake and wiper blade isn't "not fit for purpose" - a car that won't drive from A to B within 10 miles of picking the car up is.

I agree that they don't always seem all that: When I took my car for an MOT last year it passed but had an advisory notice saying rear wheel bearings would need doing before next MOT. This years MOT nothing was mentioned and wheel bearings have not been touched!!
Have had this happen with other things on other cars in the past too.

brakes would have been tested on a rolling road so although YOU may feel its awfull, the readout might have said ok,

wiper blade well, little things can be missed

It only just holds the car at the very end of it's working travel - if that passes the efficiency test then the test is inherently flawed. I've had a car fail on parking brake efficiency that was nothing like as bad.

Little things shouldn't be missed - wipers are a testable item along with washers - the fault would be aparrent when the washers were tested.

TBH I find it hard to believe that the vehicle was present for the test.

Not really, the handbrake must pass the test and still have more clicks remaining un touched. If it works at the end of travel then it should not pass.
