I think the difference with a skilled tradesman is that you only know what parts are required after they've checked the system and told you what they are. A mark-up to compensate them for the time it takes to order the parts and quite possibly pay for them before they show up to fit them is absolutely fair. A 300% mark-up is borderline criminal but if you've accepted the price beforehand it's a bit unfair to balk later once they have been fitted and tested.0

Was it a gas boiler that was fixed? And was it a Gas Safe registered engineer who carried out the work? Your paperwork should give his name and registration number.
If so, I would be calling Gas Safe to complain about this. I would be a bit surprised at a Gas Safe engineer risking his registration in this manner though.0 -

The price wasn't agreed beforehand, my landlady has advised that she told them to let her know before they carried the work out.
She's sent them a strongly worded email today after all the phonecalls telling them not to turn up at my home and if they do she will contact the police for harrasing my girlfriend and her staff (he's rang my gf and her staff countless times).0 -
Excellent, I'm glad your landlady appears to be taking control of the situation0

That's a turn up for the books! She's called the National Landlords Association for advice and reassurance and she's just transferred £25 to me in compensation for the hassle!0

I had to take legal advice on a similar situation and my solicitor advised it is not as cut and dry as some posters on here seem to imply.
