the only thing with the free ones is you dont get a 'suite' with one interface for all your security settings as you have to run different programs for your firewall, anti virus and anti malware/spyware - i personally prefer this as i get to pick and choose which is the best for me and not just get lumped with one size fits all security - which if anyone is honest is never the best solution as nothing that is one size fits all is ever the best at everything!

Thats ther only reason I stick with Mcafee, I find it easy to use, I dont understand any of the above! Running different programs etc......Im just not that techie....

you don't need to run lots of different programs. I don't think anyone in this thread will disagree with the summary below:

If you want something that costs money, doesn't detect alot of viruses and slows down your computer significantly thats Mcafee

If you want something free, very good at detecting viruses, and small/lightweight so it doesn't slow your computer choose one of the other products suggested above.

Talk of other programs is a bit of a red herring, windows has a perfectly good built in firewall so long as you've not gone in and turned it off, you don;t really need separate anti spyware/phishing etc if you know not to stumble accross the internet clicking 'yes' everytime someone asks you to install something and replying to all the corrupt nigerian bank officials offering to wire you £8million so long as you pay a £200 admin fee.

I think you're underestimating yourself;) Not really too much to understand - get yourself a decent anti-virus package and preferably one or more anti-malware solutions: SpywareBlaster and SpyBot and, if you still have problems, periodically run Malwarebytes. ;)

If you want an 'all in one' suite then id seriously recommend KASPERSKY over Mcafee

Also, mcafees firewall is VERY poor so if you do continue to use it id highly recommend switching on windows firewall too (If it will stay on)

Just had a look on the Kapersky site, which would I go for? Internet security or anti-virus?

    DONT buy direct
Its definitely cheaper via amazon (Though im sure it can be had cheaper elsewhere if you really look)
You want the full internet security suite

DONT install it until youve used the mcafee removal tool posted above

Okay, what was the other AV you used as you may have to use an uninstall tool for that as well.
