laptop gone kerpunk

my laptop has just died

i've got the battery lead connected but when i try and switch it on i just get the orange battery light flickering then goes off nothing happens with the laptop

any ideas please?

    Tried disconnecting the power, then taking the battery out for a few seconds?

    The power cable was disconnected when you took the battery out?

    Then you could try powering it up with just the cable and no battery.

    You should probably phone the manufacturer for assistance.

    I tried that but nothing happens i've put the battery back in and it booted up to a window which said

    windows failed to start insert your windows installation disc

    i don't have one the machine boots up but then just shuts down during boot up

    the laptop is 2 years old

    That's progress! It's powering up. So check your manual or HP support site and find out how to invoke your recovery function; it should have a recovery partition.

    Hopefully you'll be able to recovery the system but if you do then you'll lose any information that is stored on it.

    i more than useless with technology so wouldn't know where to begin :o i'll have to pop to pcworld tomorrow

    PC World will charge you just to press a button or two as the computer powers up then click the mouse 4 or 5 times.

    I would urge you to check HP's site. It's really not difficult at all.

    I used to do these recoveries for Currys customers every day.
