If the blood is bright red then it's come from near the end of the colon. If it's dark red/brown then that can be more serious as it's from deeper inside the bowel.
I wouldn't panic and, as hethmar said, check with the vet.
Great post on the nail about the origin, only an emergency if there is a quantity of blood.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
I wouldnt worry too much at the monent. Sounds like mild colitis - most clear up on their own but some need treatment like antibiotics etc. Even starving for 24h + then bland food little and often is usually enough to stop it in its tracks

Yes sounds like the chew. I dont give mine those any more as one was choking on a load of gunged up chew and I really panicked, rammed my hand down his throat and managed to pull a ball of the gunged up stuff out. Certainly never leave them alone if you give them chews.0

I don't give mine chews any more as she doesn't digest them so when they reappear at the other end, she thinks "dinner time" and dives in. Revolting animal.
Hope you get on ok at the vet, and if it is colitis that it's a one off event for you.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Hi All
Took my boy to the vet this morning and they said he is fine and it is very common to sometime get some bright blood in the poo. its a worry if its dark red or brown.
They think maybe the chew or a piece of plastic or something just cut him a little.
I need to keep a eye on him for a few days.
His poo this morning was soft but no slime or blood thank god.:)
Thanks for all your replys.:T:jBaby Finley :j

This made me LOL - that's so true, and until recently I thought it was only mothers of young children who did it
We got our puppy at around the same time as our youngest finally came out of nappies so I'm obviously destined to have poo on the brain for a looong time!
Thank you for all the interesting info! Our 7-month old JR had runny poos on Sunday and I freaked out when one of them had a bit of bright red blood in it. I was all set to take him to the emergency vet but DH calmed me down, pointing out that he was otherwise fine - full of beans - and that his dogs when growing up had also sometimes had this. We did the 24 h starvation then bland diet thing and it cleared up within a day (no more blood after that one episode).
I figured that it was probably due to the wormer he was given the day before (a much higher dose than when he was smaller, and all in one meal as opposed to over 3 days) and the fact that we gave him this with a yummy meal of bits of leftover lamb in mash - much richer than his usual dry food. We do give him leftovers regularly, but not usually as a whole meal so it may have been a bit too rich. Or else it was a piece of one of his toys - he does seem able to get chunks out of even supposedly indestructible ones. We don't give him rawhide chews as I'd read about how long strips of these can get stuck in the bowel and even kill a dog - after reading the comments above I think we'll continue to stay away from them!
Good to know about the red blood/dark blood, makes sense - I'll bear that in mind for next time.0 -

Soooo true: I said to someone on another board that you need to have no shame as a pet owner as conversations about poo become commonplace.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
