Abbey ATM's a joke!!!

Why do Abbey Cash Machines (ATM) let you insert your card, request cash and THEN it tells you there is no cash in the machine!!!
Why can't the machines say "NO CASH" on the screen

Natwest tells you if there are no £10 notes avail.

Abbey (santander) are shit...although sometimes machines tell you no cash if you ask for £10 but if you ask for £20 its ok as they only have £20 multiples so it could be that.

But then it would be more helpful to say "only multiples of £20 available" rather than "no cash"!

It could be that the machine DOES actually have money, but they are withholding it for their own customers (or even for other bank customers on whom they will earn an interchange fee). Either strategy would make sense for different reasons (the first for customer service, and the second for profit).

As far as I know doing either of the two things to retain the cash for others would be against LINK rules. They also will get an interchange fee for all transactions from other banks, again part of LINK rules. The interchange fees go through LINK who work out who owes what and then divides it up between who is owed what.

I've never had any problems with Abbey ATM's however, where I live I've cant use my Abbey card in The Northern Bank,The Ulster Bank only stocks £20 notes,The BOI one works sometimes & the one in the garage always works, but that's because you pay £1.50 per withdrawle.

I have actually always suspected the same thing as MarkyMark. This has happened on multiple machine over the years and quite regularly. I have even watched somebody make a withdrawel after the machine said it was empty.

I have 2 identical Barclays accounts both with Visa Debit cards, when I try to use our local Abbey ATM one of the cards works fine but the other is apparently 'not accepted'!!

    Why??!!

Further to my post above,my Abbey Basic Account ATM card wont work in the Northern Bank,I get the 'Card Not Accepted' but I tried my Abbey Visa Debit card today straight after & it worked!
So maybe all banks are starting to do this?

Is it because one of them is basic account which means no overdraft and restricted access to your money, to make sure it doesn't go overdrawn.

Doubt it as I used to be able to use it in the Northern up until a few month's ago & you cant go overdrawn on it anyway.(I use it only for my TA wages & expenses to be paid into)

Both of mine are 'basic' bank accounts - there's no difference yet the Abbey ATM will accept one but not the other.
