thank you all for answering my questions regarding upgrading my computer but i had it checked out and it turns out that my computer is about 7 years old ( where does time go?)
there used to be limitations on the main boards on what it would take, it would only be able to upgrade to 80gb or poss 120gb max, some early HP models didn't have the option to install a grapgics card and even even so it would struggle to play SIMS 3..
my new question is:
I need a new computer, i have been pc world, tesco, currys, staples ( rubbish) the most helpful staff, i have to say were in PC world but even then i am flummoxed by AMD/ intel celeron/quad duo. 3200. 5300 blah blah
so can you help me choose one that will play the SIMS 3, have loads of GB, etc etc and will be easy to install...
i will ask my next questions afterwards ( as regarding a wireless router that my service provider sent me months ago!!! i am still on bt voyager 105 so not wireless at mo but want to be as i need a laptop too ( any suggestions ( basic work and internet but not really games)
lots of questions cos you are all so good on this forum

Budget?
There's a decent Fujitsu on hotukdeals for around £400.It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -

budget under £500 i think, will that do all the things i asked about?
also will all my work ( that i have saved on a data stick in windows WORD) on windows XP just transfer straight over to windows 7 and whatever word thing they have on it,0 -
Word doesn't come as standard with Windows. You'd need to buy a copy or install your current version on the new machine. It's my problem, it's my problem

As BillScarab said the hotukdeals one is excellent spec for the money, these will be selling like hotcakes.
In fact I would buy one but short of dosh at the moment

There is no need to buy a laptop and a desktop, the laptop will do every thing you would want it to (with the possible exception of some of the Netbooks (very small laptop))
So if you want a Laptop get a laptop. and forget the desktop0 -
I recall your earlier post, there was nothing in the spec on that PC that could not be upgraded (basically just needed 1GB RAM and a better graphics card) in order to make it SIMS 3 ready. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

with 4 people in the house i want a desktop, as we always have had, in one room for usual stuff, and more up to date games etc and i would like a laptop for me, moi, myself:Dso i can go on it to my hearts content and not have someone breathing down my neck asking " have you finished yet"
