Single Parent To-Be

I am pregnant and want to be prepared for what I will be entitled to.

I currently work and get paid £24K pa but when I go on maternity leave I will only get 6 weeks full pay and then 20 weeks statutory pay. I currently live at home but need to move out however I am trying to delay this so I can sort my Finances.

I wont be able to afford private renting on £123.06 maternity pay pw and the council wont help me unless I was to say I have been made homeless once the baby is born.

I was just wondering what I may be entitled to?

Thanks!

You can claim LHA and rent privately; once the child is born you'd be eligible for the 2 bedroom rate.

  • I thought the Statutory Maternity Pay had gone up to 39 weeks? You'd then get it from weeks 7- 39 of your maternity leave.

If you find somewhere to live you will be entitled to some LHA due to a low income, at least until you return to work. Maintenance from the child's father will not be counted as income for either housing allowance or council tax.

Have you input your figures into www.entitledto.com?

Its normally 90% pay for the first 6 weeks of maternity leave, there is a 1 off maternity grant available it was introduced last year and my wife missed it by 1 week (daughter was due 1 week to early), ask your midwife about it.

My company only offer 6 weeks full pay and 20 weeks SMP - cheeky I know!

The maximum you can get is 39 weeks - a huge difference that has made me very angry!

Something not right here  Why are they only paying you 26wks SMP?
How much SMP do you get

If you qualify for SMP, it is paid:
    • for the first six weeks at 90 per cent of your average gross weekly earnings with no upper limit
    • for the remaining 33 weeks at the lower of either the standard rate of £123.06, or 90 per cent of your average gross weekly earnings

  • As DX2 and another poster has pointed out you should be recieving it for the max of 39 weeks. Contact ACAS for further advice.
