Wireless networking?????

Options
Ok here goes, can anyone give me some advice please....
desktop win XP ethernet connection to Belkin router 7630-4A working
Laptop win XP Belkin network adapter card F5D7011- V 1000
the network card seems to have a life of its own and sometimes connects straight away other times struggles to acquire the network address even when right beside the wireless router. any tips hints or ideas(apart from junking the belkin stuff and buying new) lol. I removed Zonealarm as I thought it was hindering the process, and it seemed to have helped, and I now use PC tools firewall as used by Alienrik. may be it is the settings on the firewall? although why connect sometimes and not others?

Many thanks in advance TrishaM

Try changing wireless channel on your router, it's possible that a neighbour is using the same channel or there's interference from some other source.

Changed the channel from 11 to Auto and it used 6, it connected to this last night, then this morning still on channel 6 so changed it to 11 and it connected, I live in the outback lol and no neighbours.

I don't know then. I prefer to stay away from the likes of personal firewalls because they tend to cause problems like you're experiencing.

The way I see it, if you've got a decent anti-virus then you shouldn't normally have to worry about policing outgoing connections.

The Wireless Networks tab only appears for wireless adapters that support the WZC service.

perhaps my adapter won't support the WZC,
I uninstalled the adapter and removed all belkin,
then I downloaded from the belkin site the drivers only for this adapter, unziped them and then it said to put in the adapter. Nothing happened, windows did dont see it and ask the usual, new hardware found, where are the drivers? So had to reinstall the original software again. The laptop is connected now,(but for how long who knows)I also went in to Network connections/wireless network connection(belkin adapter)/right click properties/general tab/and unticked PC Tools firewall driver. and then pressed ok. This seems to have helped. coz went I went in and reticked it again it lost connection. I then unticked it and it connected. I assume/ Hope this will be ok?

No, it does but you might have to disable the Belkin client software; I do not necessarily mean uninstall but merely disable -it's usually a right-click on the task-bar notification area, and 'Stop Windows Zero Configuration' ;) .

The adapter is immaterial here; it's Windows itself which executes WZC.
