Don't buy RAC breakdown if you actually may need to use it !

Today my partner has broken down 07.45
i call RAC to be told by a lady my cover was cancelled january the 11th............. news to me as it expires 11th febuary, They had cancelled my cover !........I paid for this cover in full so as you can imagine im not happy with this and they (after checking with me on hold) put me through to sales who open at 8am so i wait on the line, and i wait then after 10 mins i call them back. this time i speak to a male who tells me again cover has expired, i tell him i have my renewal im front of me clearly dated 12-02-10 I also told him ive been waiting in sales queue he tells me they don't open till 9am !!!! i was just left waiting there as they didn't wanna deal with the mess they had made, well he goes away im on hold again then comes back says sorry and takes details, then i advise my partner is with the car he says 'Oh you don't have personal cover'
I then say why does the card say PERSONAL cover on it, he goes away im on hold again and eventually he comes back says sorry again takes details and says they will be with us within the hour, its now 9.30 and nothing !
i ring them back and im told my cover has expired !!:mad: so here we go again, i tell them it expires feb etc etc then ................. you guessed it im on hold and eventually he comes back says sorry and takes details i stop him and say......is someone on the way ?............ he says no it was not put through at 8am after all !!
And delay is now 2 and half hours !! i tell him we been waiting hour and half....he puts me on hold and when he comes back tells me someone will be with him in 45 mins................ but will they ?

what a useless company !!

i am stunned by the Incompetence to provide the service i paid in full for !

Moral of this story is don't buy RAC breakdown if you may actually need to use its service !

Thats why I switched to RAC after waiting 5 hours for RAC to come out as they failed to notice the difference between North Devon and Kent, sending the breakdown to a village in Kent.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.
  • He is still waiting its now 10:15 he broke down 07.45

he has heard from them they sending local garage out we hope they will recover him to garage of his choice and not there own, which they should as we do have uk recovery

but who knows with these clowns !!

You need to write them a letter with your grievence after this, you may be lucky and get next years cover for free if you really want it, personally i'd take some cashback and switch to the AA

I have been with the RAC for 30 years.

I've called them out 15 - 20 times in that period, most recently about 2 years ago.

They have never been anything other than swift, courteous and efficient.

My experience of the RAC is the same as LandyAndy's.

No trouble at all with their service whenever I have called them.

All I am saying is you are reporting one bad experience and telling everyone that the RAC is rubbish. I am saying that is not my experience.

Your OP suggests that there may have been one clerical error in ending your membership a month early. Everything else you describe stems from that.

I am surprised that, if they thought your membership ended on 11 January, they didn't send you a renewal reminder. That would have stated the wrong date and you would have been able to query it.

AA and RAC patrols are still great, well experienced and well equipped guys. Unfortunately, while both organisations still claim the gloss of motoring clubs, they are no such thing and are simple corporate structures with sales and cash generation to the fore with fewer and fewer patrols actually available on the road at any time of the day.
Please stop wasting your money on these "brands". They are just the same as their similar business operators, a breakdown insurance with a diminishing on-road repar service.
I last used one of the big boys three years ago with my car immobilised and needing recovered in Glasgow City Centre at noon on a Friday. With many phone calls and much bare-faced lieing from their call centre on time the patrol would be with me (a patrol had to be sent first to make sure the car needed recovery) the patrol arrived at 3.30pm. The guy was clued-up and efficient, agreed with my diagnosis and agreed to tow me instead of "waiting for hours" for the recovery wagon to turn up.
He then told me my delay was due to him being nominated as the free patrol, despite him, at the time of my first call, heading to a breakdown in Edinburgh!
  • I too have nothing but praise for the RAC, I am sorry you have had a bad experience but I think you are in the minority.
