I have a laptop running Vista
It seemed to take forever running defrag
I dont like vista's defrag tool because you cant see the progress so yesterday I installed Pinform Defragger
Its been running for around 14 hours and its only up to 66%. I think its taken about 4 hours to move up a 1 per cent
You can see that its still moving through the files but at this rate it will take another week to finish

Does that mean my HDD is shot?
The computer was running dead slow and I already ran registry cleanups etc without much improvement
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

What size hard drive is it and how much free space is there?

    No

    > Does anyone have any ideas?
    Stop the defragger running.
    Uninstall it.
    Stop worrying.

Defragmenting a disk brings little in the way of benefit usually but if you really think it does then set the Vista options to defragment it in the background when the machine is idle.

    I have to disagree kwik
Vistas internal defrag program is very poor compared to defraggler

It probably is but I have never recorded any performance boost after defragmenting disks using any program on a computer since I've owned one. To my mind manually defragmenting a disk is a waste of time and energy.

i doubt your disk is shot, and defragging can help although there are loads of people who say they have never seen a difference and people who cant believe the difference.

the main reasons it might be taking long are, very big hard drive, very full (so little space to move files around in), scary fragmented 60%+

however the reason your system might be running slow could be a number of reasons as well, how much RAM do you have? ideally vista needs 2gb or more, if it only has 1gb it doesnt take long for that to get clogged.

other ones is what is running in the back ground run anti malwarebytes and hyjack this and post the results here for people to look
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

    Hi
It shows as 54.4 GB with 25gb used so a bit under half full
I have the impression that it's never been defragged before

    it has 512mb memory
I ran malwarebytes already and it shows no errors
I also ran ccleaner and Free Registry Repair which repaired over 2000 errors between them yet the machine is still running slow
Programs keep going into "not responding" mode

Please open malwarebytes, goto LOGS and post the WHOLE of the last logfile (Even though its clean)

"Free Registry Repair which repaired over 2000 errors between them yet the machine is still running slow"

~ I think youll find that was a VERY bad idea and youve probably made things far worse

You definitely need more RAM. 1gig would see a HUGH increase in speed

    Thanks everyone
I already figured I need extra memory

In the meantime I let it run scandisk and its stopped altogether on 27% on stage 4 out of 5
    Its just hanging there

oops, no. Its just moved up a percent
but like defragger its going extremely slow

It will be slow if you are running Vista and have only 512MB ram

    What size is your cpu?
