In 2008 My wife was given a copy of office professional plus 2007 by her college. This was for the Dell laptop they gave everyone on the course
It's a nice shiny genuine disk. Also with it was a piece of paper with the volume licensing key on it.
We need to re-load the disc on the new hard drive after a replacement hard drive was installed.
But you guessed it we have lost the code. (It's now only a 30 day trial in effect).
Microsoft said speak to the college. The college said we don't have the key anymore. Is there any way of retrieving the key from the old computer? Might her class mates at that time have the identical key?
Any thoughts?

Not heard of those others - and needing to turn of AV would worry me - but Belarc Adviser is well known and free (https://www.belarc.com). Install this on your old computer and when you run it it will list all your licences and a bunch of other information.0

Yes, Volume Licences are all the same. These little bits of paper are more valuable than gold or the DVD itself, do not lose them, copy / keep in log book forever, you never know when you will need it.
Have you looked under the DVD and check the case thoroughly?
Update
SIW is System Information For Windows and been around for years.
SIW is a standalone utility that does not require installation (Portable Freeware) - one less installed program on your PC as well the fact that you can run the program directly from an USB flash drive, from a floppy, from a network drive or from a domain login script.
SIW can be distributed freely (ftp, archives, CD-ROMs ...)
IE Does not need to be installed like Belarc0 -
Or this one.

when you have the key - my advice is (and it's what I do with mine) e-mail yourself with it, then, no matter what happens, you still have access to it. The media is easy to replace..they key isn't.Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

So all of these programs to read the licence key from the replaced hard disk are going to work then?
Get a copy of the key from another student, they are all the same.
