Iphone - monthly contract and tethering

Hi folks

I am about to purchase my first Iphone.

My mobile contract is also shortly up for renewal.

I have been told that I can combine the Iphone with a mobile broadband connection called tethering.

What's the best solution ?

Cheers

Tethering costs an extra £15 per month which is the same as buying a mobile broadband dongle. If I was you, I'd stick with the dongle or the iPhone's battery won't last too long.

How do they "police" the no-tether rule?

What happens if you take the sim out of the iphone and put it in a sim-free usb dongle?

The easy way is to monitor data use if you use a PC chances are the amount of data will shoot up compared to an iPhone.

Also every browser sends details of what it is in the web page requests. It would not be hard to check these and if it's not an iphone reject them or mark for review.
It's possible to spoof therse so that it makes say IE look like Firefox, but the average user won't, and there are more complicated wasy to check.

Putting the sim in a dongle and the IMEI and MAC address would not match known iPhone ones, so they could check that way, not to mention the data use would increase too. Changing the IMEA is illegal in the UK, but again not impossible to spoof.

Finally I suspect every update on iTunes would also check and ensure only people who have paied the tethering charge have the ability

Tethering seems like a bit of a rip off to me when you compare it to having a USB dongle. I've got an iPhone but still brought a dongle for surfing on my netbook.
