Website problems - 1and1

Options
I have very limited knowledge of web building and packages - apart from that I can set up my own websites using web builders :o

I was with Fasthosts, but decided it was looking a bit dated and I decided to move to 1and1. Big mistake. I have had no end of problems, which I have listed below - I have been waiting for weeks to get this sorted out and simply dont know what to do next.

I have two web packages (although they are charging me for three)

1. when you go to one of my websites, you type in the name of the site, but then when you get there it says at the top 'initialwebsitexxx56xx' rather than the email address. They do not seem to think that this is a problem.

2. When I asked then how to forward my emails into my usal emails, they went through a very complicated process, which has left me with a permanent box on my screen saying 'enter your user name and password for the following server' - they seem incapable of understanding how to help

3. I have to ring several times a week and never seem to get anywhere - ditto with email

4. On my other web package, when I set it up, I feel I was tricked into clicking to get an e-shop, when I thought I was just going through the process of getting a business website - when I rang to say I had been charged for this e-shop they said the best thing to do would be to set up a business web package, then cancel the e-shop. I did this and now find out that the e-shop wont be cancelled for a year and they are going to charge me £18.99 every month until then! I cannot stop this as they have my details, the only thing I can do it close my bank account - not a straightforwrd process by any means.

I am so frustrated I could scream!!!!

How long ago did you sign up to the business package ? distance selling regulations give you 7 days to change your mind this applies to services as well as goods.

Im presuming you have your own domain? do you know how much bandwidth you use every month ?

I told them it was wrong the day I signed up - they told me there was nothing they could do apart from cancelling it - they told me to set up a new package first so that I could use the domain names.

I do not have any proof of this though as it was all in phone calls.... it all started on 9th Jan
  • It does not help that I cannot understand half of what they are saying to me as it is an offshore call centre.

I wonder if you could ring them up again and state that you asked them to cancel this on the day you signed up and it hasnt been cancelled why not ? mention the distance selling regulations follow it up with an email stating your case in full and asking for your contract to be cancelled forthwith as you clearly asked for on the day.

*recommendation removed zee's 123reg recommendation gets some great reviews unlike what i said now im starting to worry although its been ok so far just hope it stays that way :( *

after being ''taken'' by 1&1 a few years ago for £600 plus ,would not touch with barge pole ,although some people must like them ,remember you can allways transfer your domain [i have used 123reg for 5 years no problem ] if you have contract for website , I can give you no advice of what is in your contract . remember to print out a copy of your website ,so if you want to use someone else you have a copy of it and can vary it ,if required,if stuck and cannot move away due to contract ,you coulkd obtain another domain from 123reg and redirect website to it , its easy ,I have 600 web domains from them because their website is very easy to navigate ,especially as I am disabled and is hard to use keyboard at times, also hostgator .com in usa [no vat and very cheap ] ,obtain name from them and copy website and place on sit3 for under £5 pm or less plus cost of domain , web controls are great.

Wow - Never realised 1&1 gave so many problems. I only use them (and an old domain I've got with Easily).

Got some domain only stuff with them and one business package and had no problems.

From the glowing review of 123reg though, might try them for the next domain though!

Yeh I'd be another fan of 123-reg. I've moved domains in and out, only had to call them once and they have an English call centre and sorted it out in minutes.

Been with them a few years and have had no problems with hidden renewal charges or other stuff.

However, I've never used them for hosting.
Just for holding and pointing nameservers (all of which can be done online and you have no reason to contact customer support).

I know of another man who had a barrage of domains with 1and1 and had similar amounts of money debited for renewals because the cancellation process was "not straightforward".

1and1 are another company which keeps your financial details and will renew your subscriptions unless you cancel.

And experience tells me this is not a good thing...

lifeisbutadream... have you tried emailing the complaints section. And writting into them?

    Here are the details:

    Complaints Department
    1&1 Internet Limited
    Aquasulis House
    10-14 Bath Road
    Slough
    SL1 3SA

    complaints@1and1.co.uk

I really, really dislike them. Normally use 123reg... godaddy... weycrest for hosting + domain names depending on what promo codes are on at the time. No problems with any of them :)

Funny you say that, I've just been reading a thread from google about Customers cancelling months in advance... yet 1&1 still take the money out.#

1 customer changed bank details... so 1&1 referred him to a debt agency.

    1.
Could you please post a screenshot of this to clarify, it sounds like a placeholder but I'd like to see what you actually see (or if you could post the website addy) to understand it better.

    2.
My guess is the settings and/or password are wrong, I would suggest Googling for 1&1 server settings email forwarding or something similar to that. Usually it's correct

    3.
Can't comment on this, I host my own website, bought my domain from fasthosts or 1&1 but have all the domain ownership and administration myself. Using it for experience when I start my business. It's just poor customer support basically

    4.
Legal eagles may be able to look into this for you or offer some suggestions from this site. Could be able to cancel / get money back, see what people can suggest

Sorry about deleting your message, it was too long when I quoted it
